I have a desktop that has been serving my needs for about five years now.

I never had issues with it. When I went to college I left it at my parents home and booted it every time I was over there. Over the summers I would play games on it. Nowadays, it serves as my photography and music computer as it has a lot of storage space and I have about 200GB of photos to store.

Yesterday, the computer went bonkers.

When I boot up, everything goes smooth until some warnings appear.

The first says

Rundll32.exe - application error:
the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click OK to terminate the application.

Second one says

avast! Warning
avast! detected unautarized modification of this program file (....\ashDisp.exe)
Continuing can be dangerous. Run the program anyway?
Yes No

Ok, my first reaction f****, some virus got me.Avast is dead, rundll32 is screwed. Something is up.

I click on OK, the rundll warning comes up again. I click OK again, it dissapears.

I click Yes for avast, it disappears.

All of a sudden dl.exe opens in a CMD window.

WTF?!?!?!

A new warning says:

16 bit MS-Dos subsystem
dl.exe
the ntvdm cpu has encourered an illegal instructions
gives me a memory location and clse ignore buttons

I click close, and more of the same windows pop up.

I check my task manager and the all these start up applcations are using memory ... and causing the CPU usage to go up and down in a constant pattern.

I thought to myself, lets see if something is up in the startup ... so i try to load msconfig

It crashes with the standard windows error report screen.

I load up fire fox. Internet is down. I am connected. Every internet app ceases to work. I have no firewall, proxy, anything in the way. I'm on my laptop writing this and am having no problem.

I booted into safe mode. mscofig does not work ... avast does not work ....

I am out of ideas, can you guys help me out? I tried googling without avail.

I'm running XP pro on Desky computer in my sig. I believe it has the latest updates since I have to restart about every other month for windowsUpdate

internet does not work

system update does not seem to do anything but F___ up my folder names and reoganize my photos .... :( sadness

That's exactly what I was thinking when I read this...
In short: stick in XP Disk, go Start-Run, type in sfc /scannow.

Time for a re-install.
Even if you get the malware off, you have no idea what they have installed now.
They have likely installed one or more back doors into your PC.
Backup your data using another PC before beginning.

I recommend using a decent firewall like Comodo and a good HIPS package like System Safety monitor.

I also use Protowall and Blocklist Manager.
This is currently preventing a firefox hack from contacting the internet.
Each time I run firefox, it tries to connect to 4 different places even though I have blank as my homepage.
Luckily Protowall prevents them from being contacted.
I'm due a re-install too :)

I am in the process of backing everything up right now. I should be set for a reinstall next week.

Thanks a bunch on all of the suggestions ! ;)

Did you run the sfc?
It's a ton easier than a full-blown reformat... and may have very well been all that was needed.

i havent formated yet no

windows malware protector or whatever it is called helped a bit

windows boots
cli.exe has an error
but rundll32.exe works

internet is back ... omg happyness!

still the computer is f*ed up ... time to try to remove all of this crap

Windows Defender? Microsoft Malware Removal Tool?

I still suggest going to http://safety.live.com and scanning your machine.

I would have backed up all my data immediately and reinstalled. After that if trouble continues the fault is most likely hardware related.

I start to lose trust to hardware after 2-3 years of use and on the sign of first trouble I upgrade at that age. Nothing sucks more than having faulty I/O corrupting your files and backup slowly with time.
