I have a disk that is starting to fail. What is a good app that will transfer a window7 install from one disk to another. gparted works great with windows xp, but falls on it face with windows 7. After the transfer with gparted, windows says it is not a genuine copy and will not allow reactivation.

I've used Acronis to transfer to new drives. Maybe the hard drive manufacturer has a free download for transferring to new drives? My Plextor drive came with software to transfer the image.

I use ddrescue (available on most linux livecds) to a brand new drive. This will make a bit for bit copy of the source drive to the destination drive working around bad sectors. One of the other key benifits of ddrescue is that it does no filesystem checking at all so not stop like other utilities do when they hit some filesystem corruption.

WARNING: make sure you understand how to tell what the source drive and the destination drive because dd/ddrescue does not care at all if you get these reversed.
