Windows 7 platform is not obsolete!

Well, if the man paid for 7, considers newer ones inferior for his uses, and wants to use it, why not?

I for one commend you OP, I still like 7 a lot, consider it the best one. Do some games or software suites do version checks nowadays and refuse to run on 7?

Yep, DX12 only titles.

Because it required a list of steps, has described in the article, no ways in which the newer one are inferior has been given either in it, making the question why quite valid ?

If the man like to hack-try things and experiment for fun of it and create content on is blog), why not ?

Solidworks since 2021 (that they say):
https://www.solidworks.com/support/system-requirements
https://blogs.solidworks.com/tech/2020/02/windows-7-end-of-life-how-will-this-affect-solidworks.html

Latest longer than Windows 8 support, I think it goes for most of Autodesk suite.

Why not just install your favorite version of Linux and enjoy that?
I imagine it exists wanted application that run well out of the box on Win7 and not on Linux ?

You got me there, I just assumed he considers it inferior based on my own preferences. I was "projecting" my distrust towards MS.

Rootkits and 0 day exploits don't leave a calling card like malware and pop up porn ads...as a network admin I just shake my head at people like you. There is a reason security is always playing catch up.
And again if you know what you're doing you won't get infected! PERIOD! Yes I will say it again.

WOW, windows 10 doesn't support r00tk1ts?!? thats amazing.

why poop on someone who clearly, knows enough to be able to daily drive windows 7 with out much issue. Maybe, if he had picked up a used windows 7 PC at a garage sale, would i be concerned. AND 'network admin' does not make someone a 'windows specialist' Some of the worst offenses of lax security i have ever seen came from people that worked in I.T.

I think you miss the point entirely. Windows 10 still gets security and exploit patches, etc., Windows 7 is EOL. Even people that don't know what they are doing can use Windows 7 without issues, that means nothing. By the way I'm the SAQ's for PCI DSS compliance administrator as well. Look that up if you need to or just keep being obtuse. I realize the truth hurts no matter how logical.

and windows 10 gets hammered 10 times more than windows 7 currently because it is the current wide spread windows OS. A well taken care of Windows 7 PC with a good anti-malware, and using a CURRENT up to date browser, are going to keep things in line well. There are still hackers looking for breaches on Windows 7, probably the most likely field for those to take place in is the banking industry, and your area of expertise. However MOST windows 7 computers still in place in those locations would be windows 7 embedded, or some other customizable windows variant. (XP Embedded is still highly popular actually) there is windows 10 for embedded applications and systems, however i have not seen it in the wild yet. i am sure it is out there, somewhere. The back end systems managing the majority of gas stations in America just barely started moving off of Windows XP on new installs. they are not upgrading already running systems unless the store changes ownership. (even then, sometimes the only thing that changes is the logo on the Credit Card machine.)

I have made a career out of fixing things other people do wrong.

Nice long way of saying "I don't really know, so I'll deflect."

Bowman15 is right on this one.

*shrugs* good luck...that is why you see hackers having a field day with older non patched operating systems. That second sentence is absolutely not true when it comes to security on Win 7. Sounds like you should know better but continue because oh well, others are doing it. Certain business's are terribly behind updating payment/financial systems but that does not make it right. Its usually because of cost and not security. Pont to point embedded systems are a whole other ball game although using the same windows kernels. I have experience using point to point systems as well as Windows for Kiosks. The main problem is people that should know better don't care...You know what you know I guess.

So what would be the most probable way someone can get their 7 infected? Most often exploited vulnerability?

the most common way is still social engineering.
the most common exploit is still breaches in network stack, usually SMB1 stuff. disabling legacy password hashes and legacy SMB stuff is a major step up for legacy systems. also if you truly have a legacy PC that must hang around, i recommend software firewall on the PC, with an IP whitelist. a GOOD network will eliminate the MAJORITY of the things that will cause issues on a PC. Email is also an issue, but really, this falls back on social engineering.

what i am saying is the edge device can be made irrelevant, it could be using windows 3.1 for a gui. if you have things in place to account for that, it can be fine. The OP is using an older OS, if he understands that and accommodates for it in his actions, there is nothing wrong with it.

giving a random person a windows 7 pc to take and use for college, probably a bad idea. custom building a windows 7 machine as an I.T. person with a love for windows 7, i see no problem here.

I use Windows 7 on my main PC for music, browsing, some games and some video. A 1080ti based machine.
The experience is so much better and the OS is configured exactly how I like.
No ridiculous updates shafting my enjoyment and guaranteed uptime, its sweet.

Games needing more performance or features like HDR (most games wont allow this on W7) / Ray tracing etc, I use a 2nd powerful Gaming machine.
This machine sees no browsing, only games with a 3090.

You can also bang a hooker without a condom. If you know what you're doing, you won't get infected.

windows 10 AME editon is a Thing strips the ever living .... outa the OS and it still runs games and DX12 just fine, it is infact the fastest install of win 10 iv ever seen.

win10 on Roids

7 was a good OS, no doubt. But 10 is so mature now, why cut yourself down on features and capabilities. I don't get it.

mature? it is still in pubertal period.
ugly UI, two control panels, inability to drag'n'drop item to desktop from start menu(wtf)?
they broke so much functionality its actually hilarious. Its like they had a big meeting about budget issues and were just like "we dont have the budget to finish all this, they'll never know". Technically the functionality is still there, but its so half done it's mind blowing.

modern games don't have any value to me.
Asrock Radeon 6900XT 16Gb VRAM

That seem a strange choice of video cards for a pro workloads (or an expensive one for non modern video games).

inability to drag'n'drop item to desktop from start menu(wtf)?
If you mean drag n droping item to desktop by creating a new shorcut on the desktop by dragging a shortcut from the start menu to the desktop, that seem to work
