Windows 7 Missing Desktop Icons

I have two systems with identical hardware and on both systems, the desktop icons randomly vanish.

Both Reliability History and Problem Report failed to detect the error in question. Event viewer doesn't seem to detect the error either.


I am aware of the scale of this issue and I can't seem to find a fix anywhere (except for the usual Right Click > View and Show Desktop Icons, which is kinda obvious).


If you require information such as Windows Version, Installed Apps/Updates, Hardware and such, I am happy to provide it upon request.

So right clicking on the desktop and choosing show desktop icons fixes it?

Yes, but it's not a fix.

It fixes it but it doesn't fix it? Guess I'm missing something.

It restores it, but it's not permanent.

gpedit.msc, User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Desktop. Make sure that 'Hide and disable all items on the desktop' and 'Desktop\Disable all items' are set to Not Configured.

They were already set to Not Configured.

I have the same problem with desktop icons. Ive had to add them back 3 or 4 times already. I have no idea what causes this.

I haven't ever experienced this on any Win7 machines.
