Cool stuff. You can do it with VirtualPC 2007 and other VM software as well. And yeah, memories... lots of 'em, mostly good but some absolute nightmares too hiding around in the gray matter. :D

    Good jorb cybereality.

Now if you want to impress me, run the same installation of Windows 3.11 in "High Color" mode. If you want to REALLY impress me, run Windows 2.1 (yes, two point one)/386 in "High Color".

    this is not impressive

If you really want to be cool, install internet explorer 2.5 in vista... and watch the chaos it wrecks

It's no fun unless you're running Win 3.1 emulated in another OS which is running in a virtual machine.

Tough audience. You see people brag but don't produce results of their own. Go away threadcrappers.

To the OP, awesome! Brings back lots of memories. I've been meaning to do something like this sometimes just for the hell of it.

Agreed, very cool indeed... Windows 3.1 was released before I was born =)
Threadcrappers get out, it is cool regardless.

Yeah, Spectre was the reason I even bothered going through all the trouble with Windows 3.11. As a kid we used to sneak into the computer room at school and needed to use the principals password to get admin access to play the game on an old Apple IIe. Those were the days. Expect I bought the crappy Windows CD-ROM version by mistake!

And yes, I know this isn't "new", I linked to the tutorial I used so I was not trying to take credit for figuring this out. I was just letting other people know that Windows 3.11 on Vista was possible. I did a search on the forum first and nothing came up, so surely this is news to some people.

Also, I was surprised to find that 16-bit Windows applications do still work under Vista 32-bit (despite what most people think). However the speed was too slow for gaming and would not go full-screen which is why I used DOSBox.

I've done this before too to run old Windows games. It's much easier (or least it seemed that way at the time) to script a dosbox cmd file to run the game from the desktop than it was to manipulate an entire virtual machine from the VM software console.

As far as 16-bit apps on Vista go: 32-bit supports them. 64-bit does not.

One thing I don't like about Vista is the fact that we can't get a full screen command prompt. I like to hide from the desktop and submerse myself into the darkness of a command line interface that only the inner-geek could enjoy.

You can get around that by installing XP SP2 video drivers to avoid having WDDM installed. Here's a Microsoft Support KB on how to make DOS go into full screen mode: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;926657

Pretty cool, but as others have mentioned, start playing with Virtual PC, you can do some pretty cool stuff with it alot easier, and its free.

I couldn't get Diablo 1 working on XP for some reason, so I setup a separate Win2K virtual PC and it works great. I also use it all the time for sandboxes for testing software installs, drivers, applications or something that might be malware.

    I need start testing hyper-v on 2008....

I have Virtual PC set up with 3.1, 95, 98, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, and XP. The good old days. I ran every one of them in their time.

Might as well have them all. I forgot to mention my DOS 5.0 as well. I got my 3.1 working with sound, CD's and the Internet. IE 5 FTW. :D And don't forget Office 4.3 Professional.

    Nice....

I spent a lot of time making perfectly optimized conventional memory for VPC in DOS 6.22/Win 3.1. Dual config.sys menu with EMM386 and UMBPCI.SYS, depending on what games I want. 622K and 625K respectively. What's yours?
