My registry got corrupted (again!) somehow, and i used an emergency repair disk to sort it out.

Problem is now, when i try to reinstall Nero, it gives me an error saying that the administrator doesnt allow programs to be installed, even when i am logged in as administrator!!

Any ideas how i can sort this?

Create another login with Admin privelages and try to install. If you are logged in as Admin this shouldn't be a problem.
What happens?

i get a popup saying:

"The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation"

Then the installer exits :(

Here is the log file from the installation:

Try looking here to see if this helps. I was looking at this part of the article:

Machine polices can be configured under the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer

Value Name: AlwaysInstallElevated
Value Data Types: REG_DWORD
Description: If this value is set to "1" and the corresponding user value is also set, the Installer always installs with elevated privileges. Otherwise, the Installer uses elevated privileges to install managed applications and uses the current user's privilege level for non-managed applications

Value Name: DisableMSI
Value Data Types: REG_DWORD
Description: If this value exists and is set to "2", the Installer is always disabled for all applications. If this value is set to "1", the Installer is disabled for non-managed applications but is still enabled for managed applications. If this value is set to "0', any other number, or is absent, the Installer is always enabled.

No luck im afraid, altho the log file for the install has now change to contain the following:

There isnt anything in there that jumps out to me that could be causing this problem. :(

Right, ive tried to install it as Admin and also as another account with admin privileges.

Ive managed to install other programs just not this one.

Its pretty crucial that i get Nero working tho :(

OR has anyone got any bright ideas for free and good cd writing software that i can burn images with also?

Try this:

START>RUN>GPEDIT.MSC

then

Local Computer Policy>Computer Configuration>Administrative Template>Windows Components>Windows Installer

See if there are any policies set that shouldn't be, like the "Disable Windows Installer" policy.

I looked over your log again, and figured it had something to do with the string A4D7B764-4140-11D4-88EB-0050DA3579C0. So I Googled that, and found this. It is exactly the problem you are having. The fix is for XP, but I would imagine 2k would be the same. Fix is this:

If Nero has been removed and customer has trouble reinstalling it:

This usually works
Go to Run, enter C:\WINDOWS\INSTALLER
When that windows open there will be a string: {A4D7B764-4140-11D4-88EB-0050DA3579C0}
Remove this, then reinstall Nero

Hope THAT works for you...

Thanks waldog for all your doing, but im afraid that doesnt work either :(

I cant find the folder of that name.

Christ i wish i had an idea of what the hell was wrong :(

Not to belabor the obvious, but have you called Nero's support line?

That's what we are here for. Besides, no one should be Nero-less. Did you actually look thru the drive looking for the folder? The folder C:\WINDOWS\INSTALLER is a hidden folder.

I have found the C:\WINNT\INSTALLER folder i meant i havent been able to find the folder named: A4D7B764-4140-11D4-88EB-0050DA3579C0

:(

I'm about out of ideas - if it were me, I might try a different version of Nero to see if that works. I might set policies manually, but you say you can install other programs, so I dont think that would help. You can try cleaning the registry of Nero keys too....

I've tried two versions of Nero that i receved with two different burners. Also ran RegSupreme and that got rid of a lot of Nero crap.

Got any other ideas for cd burning software for free that i can use? Just to burn my crap then reinstall Windows?

Well, XP has that built in burning (cr)app - you could always use that. What I like to do to back up is just install another HDD, and drag your stuff over to it - that is IF you have one.
