Windows 10: Why can't I disable Windows Defender?

We switched from Sophos to Defender in my Enterprise environment about a year ago. We have had a significant decrease in instances of malware infections on our Windows computers. Been seeing a bit of a rise on the Macs though.

Anyone arguing against Windows Defender doesn't know wtf they are talking about. Especially in the Enterprise market, but equally so in the Desktop environment. Installing 3rd party AV software these days actually increases your attack vector. Too many CVEs out there with full remote code execution in a lot of AV software packages.

Also glad to see B00nie being his old self again. How about you scamper back to the Linux forum? You're literally just trolling again.

I also swear that third party AV is the cause of many Windows 10 failed updates.

Actually I don't care if all Windows users get their drives encrypted...

Nor do I as it means more money for me sorting them out locally!!!!

I use Defender purely because it comes with the OS. I also routinely run Malwarebytes scans as well & nothing is ever detected. Can't remember the last time I had an infection on any of my own machines or seen MWB or Defender stop anything other than the rare keygen which I have forgotten to add to the excluded list. Maybe it is because I don't go round visiting dodgy sites or clicking shit that I know I shouldn't be clicking!

I remember seeing an article over the weekend that stated that MAC OSX had more targeted malware threats in the wild at the moment than Windows does.

here is the link - https://www.thequint.com/tech-and-a...-more-malware-threat-than-windows-2019-report

How true it is I do not know but it seems to be a reasonably well written article.

The article is click bait. The only reason malware detections on MacOS devices has risen is solely due to the fact that Apple owners have woken up to the fact that malware exists under MacOS and are suddenly actively checking for it - Most of that malware has probably been there for years.

Furthermore, malware takes about 5 mins tops to remove on a Mac and never damages the underlying OS. In comparison it can take an hour or more to remove malware on a Windows based machine using multiple malware removal tools and it's not uncommon for the updater and networking stack to be irreversibly damaged.

I just use Defender these days, most third party AV vendors are actually worse that the malware they're supposed to prevent both in relation to privacy and the sucking of precious system resources.
Seconded. I run Windows 10 with built in Defender for about 2 years. No viruses were detected a month ago. I used to run Dr. Web Live to check viruses.
