Windows 10 Mobile Is Officially Dead

Microsoft has officially signed the death certificate for Windows 10 mobile as it recently posted a "Windows 10 Mobile End of Support: FAQ." On December 10, 2019, "Windows 10 Mobile users are no longer eligible to receive new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free assisted support options, or online technical content updates from Microsoft for free." Microsoft has a suggestion for users of Windows 10 mobile; "move to a supported Android or iOS device."

The Windows 10 Mobile end of support date is the same for consumer and enterprise. Microsoft encourages all customers to move to a supported Android or iOS device. The end of support date applies to all Windows 10 Mobile products, including Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise.
 
The history as I see it.

MS had a nice desktop and a nice mobile environment (windows mobile). The users of windows mobile wanted a mobile experience more like the desktop experience. (More win32 apps that either ran on arm or an x86 mobile platform that ran desktop applications).

What MS did... Discarded windows mobile in favor of windows phone. (A single threaded single task OS kind of like DOS but not as good.) Then... When that went over like a turd in a punch bowl.

MS said... Lets listen to our customers and make the desktop more like the mobile experience. Hence we got 8.1. (For those casually reading this is really funny!)

Remember... MS probably spent a billion dollars to develop the windows 7 desktop. Well optimized and ergonomic. Then moved to that crap Metro...

Someone at MS is an idiot. But, they are making bucket loads of money so someone must be buying their products.
 
I will actually miss it, for me it is perfect, and the start screen is all I need: clean but personal, and the live tiles provide me with all the relevant information I need without any clutter.
But I will still be able to hold on to my Lumia 950 for some time I guess/hope … my wife is still using her Lumia 925 with Windows Phone 8.1 and no plans to let it go :)
 
Still got my Alcatel Idol 4S with Windows 10 Mobile, but running a Moto G6 on Oreo.

R.I.P., my first Windows Phone was a Motorola MPX 220.

The phone companion for Windows 10 is not bad, but not great either, but seems to work with Android.

My first and only windows phone was an HTC Diamond 2... I used that thing until my local carrier could no longer support it. Then I went iPhone and never looked back, not because other options aren't out there but just because I'm old and lazy now, and and iTunes has too much of my money for me to move off it.
 
How does this impact Windows 10 on tablets?

Oddly enough, I have a Windows 10 tablet that I'm kinda fond of. Only Windows thing I run and it's pretty good as a tablet. :S

I have stock Android, still hate it prefer Windows phone/win mobile but both are dead so stuck with this, as iOS is a non starter. Stock Android feels less like a toy than iOS but still both feel more like toys than phones and tools.
 
WTH, this was decided some time ago so what's the big freaking deal?

Only problem for me was the photo app kept showing old pics round and round. Not sure how to change that for diff. pics to show.

Just got my Moto x 4 so charging that and making switch.

Today my 640 gave me a green screen... this thing has been through a lot, but I still like it.
Wish I could get a live tile experience on android. Dunno if that's even possible but I doubt it.
 
I still have 3 Windows 10 phones on my desk. Windows 10/BB10/WebOS just felt right as a mobile OS, but apps, money, and the whole shabang.
 
Windows 10 Mobile was already dead, it just had been in denial all this time.
 
So, let me tell you, this happens EVERY year ("I swear!" as others might say). When I had a Nokia Lumia 1020 (the phone with the 41MP camera) I came to observe that it seems that every year Microsoft plays out this shenanigans making it known that Windows Phone is dead and will no longer be developed, only for a plot twist later in the year where out of the blue Microsoft starts talking Windows Phone again and as though great things will happen. Repeat.
 
I have an old lumia 640 with a removable battery and microsd slot, which i use when I'm at the gym. It's a cheaper model, all plastic, but it works well as a phone/mail browser. Didn't really care for their mobile gui, but for 30$ brand new two years back, android had nothing like it.
 
Microsoft isn't out of this space yet... You watch... The angle isn't that SmartPhones are becoming more like computers. Its that computers are becoming more like phones. The Surface line of products will have a pocket sized "computer" that will allow you to make phone calls.

It was stable, fast, had a good and customizable interface, and relatively secure. Sadly nobody except Microsoft developed apps for it because nobody bought them because they were late to the game and most people are too invested in either iTunes or the google play store to switch.

No they are going to ditch the phone part and make a small tablet that makes calls through Skype or Teams.
 
I had a windows phone ( HTC ) and really it was a okay phone, but i should hurry and mention i am the kind of phone user that use a phone for calling - test - mail and that's pretty much it.

To be honest i would prefer a windows phone, but only as far as in Microsoft are my poison of choice, it is not like i want some form on integration with my windows PC, i pretty much connect my phone to PC as often as i connect to a wifi spot,,,, which are close to never, but some times at home i turn on the wifi in my router to do something,, and when done i turn off wifi again.
As a tester of some things with wifi in them i do dome times connect my phone to those devises, but in day 2 day use i never do that as i feel having wifi on are about as bad as looking at a phone screen for more than 5 minutes a day.

You know, I genuinely don't think I've ever seen one in the wild. By no stretch of the imagination am I a phone enthusiast but I am an appalling shoulder surfer, can't think of any occasion of spotting a Windows Mobile 10 device.

Might look into that, but now I'm thinking I'll just go for the android experience for a bit. I'm sure I can adjust and will like it as much.

I've only seen mine and my family's phones. Everyone that sees mine don't even know what it is and people are always telling me to download apps. When I explain I can't get those apps for it, they tell me to go to play store, then itunes. Guess one good thing now is I don't have to have a 5 minute conversation about windows phones anymore. (After switching)
 
Just need to push the spear in further to kill the actual heart of windows 10.
 
As someone who has owned and used many Windows Mobile Phones from 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 they were great devices with a very optimized OS. My little Lumia 635 (512 megs of ram and lowbie qualcomm 4 core processor) never stutters, slows down, hangs or hiccups like my Note 4 (3 gigs of ram and top tier qualcomm processor). The hardware that Nokia packed in the Lumia line of devices was years ahead of the flagship hardware of the competition. My Lumia 920 in 2012 took better pictures than any phone on the market by a large margin, it is not the sensor, it is the glass; Carl Zeiss glass and multiple panes of it. Those mars rovers (Curiosity) have something like 2 megapixel sensors but amazing glass to shoot through. The same phone also had a HAAC microphone which could record up to 140 dB. The same phone also was one of the first ones on the market with optical image stabilization. Oh it also had a curved screen which was almost bezel less on the sides.

Since my Note 4 has the EMMC error and I have been too lazy to try to do the mainboard CPU pressure fix I have been rocking my little Lumia 635 for the past month and it just works... Not bad for a $20.00 clearance phone that was $95 MSRP in 2014.

Sad that we lost the best phone hardware manufacturer in the world due to the whole MS Mobile fiasco.

You can set it to show favorite pictures, if you set new favorites the loop will change. Best is to keep a small nr of favorites and change them when you want to ... it seems that when having a large nr of favorites, the loop just takes the same limited nr instead of all of them. As soon as you add/remove some favorites, it seems the loop is reshuffeled or something ...
 
when they trashed Windows Mobile 6.5x, it was dead, Windows Mobile 8.1 was a fairly good release but still tooo little tooo late
 
To be honest, I’m not aware of a single person I know who used a windows phone. Although less competition is typically bad IMO
 
I doubt they will totally do away with a "touch" friendly UI as they have the Surface tablets. Truth be told, 8/8.1 was actually much better in that respect. For touch screen devices it was just clean and the fluid transitions, swipe gestures, etc just made more sense. But they pushed it too hard on regular desktop users where it was not as usable. 10 came out with a half assed mish mash of the two with the start menu and the "tablet mode" in 10 is actually not as nice or intuitive as the Metro interface was. My hope is that they will diverge the two interfaces and have a solid desktop interface and a solid touch screen interface. That will benefit the Surface type tablet users greatly as well as those with "other" touch screen devices. Some of the "other" devices were just ahead of their time like the Surface Table which came in the original Microsoft one, then an updated version from Samsung (Surface 2.0) which then got renamed to PixelSense because they wanted to reuse the Surface name for the new convertible tablets. That ultimately caused (and still does) cause a lot of headaches for anyone trying to find any sort of info on the Surface Tables. There are actually some other brands of tables and wall displays (like the Smart boards) which are much more modern and could greatly benefit from a well done touch UI for larger screens. I actually have a 46" 1920x1080 table with object aware 32 point multi-touch that runs on a modern mini-ITX board inside with an i5, SSD, etc which is pretty fun but there is just not a ton of multi-touch software for desktop OS's and larger screens. The original Surface UI also only will run on Windows 7 anyways due to how the OS's deal with touch input. There are not many alternative multi-touch aware and optimised UI's though so there are some limits.

We have all seen it in our lives though. A lot of things you see in sci-fi movies eventually becomes reality. How many movies have you seen with a big screen on the wall and the actors are either touching or talking to it..... News studios have already been using the modern equivalents for years now using various setups like touch technology from PQ Labs and specialized software that can interpret the touch interactions and map those to mouse/keyboard type interactions.

As far as having a phone OS. Yeah - just not an easy market to make headway into. I think many saw that coming.
