Windows 10 is right around the corner, which version is catching your eye?

So if I have a 8 pro OEM version - what am I gonna get for free?

An 8 page abortion of an article which can be summed up like this:

Win 10 Versions:

Home: You don't need bitlocker, hyperV , or join to windows Domain
Pro: You need to join your machine to a domain and want to mess with Virtual Machines
Enterprise: Full lockdown from Corporate Masters required
Education: Do you have 10000 machines running in a school? If so choose this one
Internet of Things: Is this a Raspbery Pi or another ARM device? Get this, it's free

That's it.

If you have a Home edition you get a Home edition. If you have a Pro you can choose. That's it.

Complicating things is that Pro and Enterprise can choose different update branches.

You'll get Pro but since its OEM it won't be transferable to another motherboard.

So, if your motherboard dies you are out of luck and have to buy a new copy?

It will be a few months before I even consider upgrading any systems. I need to see what happened if I need to reload or replace hardware.

.

Not sure about that. To me it seems to be a bigger benefit to stick with Enterprise for the LTSB option.

We currently run enterprise at our university and don't(directly) support student machines so the upgrade from home version feature doesn't matter. Unless they are going to give us a huge discount I can't see us changing from enterprise to education.

In my experience, a simple call to MS stating that you upgraded/replaced the mobo and they give you a new key. I did that 3 times with Win7

I've done the same thing with a technet 8 install as well. No problems.

On this link, i got a popup for 50% off of a roku 3, then another ad covered it up and i really wanted that roku ad!

Ive spent ten minutes refreshing the page trying to get that ad. Crap fuck crap!

Internet of Things. How quaint. The more the corporations know about you the more they can target ads to your needs. Really?

Unless Windows 10 allows me to play the games I have been playing for many years - and shows physical proof - I will not be upgrading to Windows 10 nor will I fall for the 'this patch solves your compatibility issues' bullshit.

I want to see proof. Otherwise, pound sand, Windows 10.

the only thing i want more than basic, is maybe gpe (because so many tweaks seem to use it) and the ability to not do updates (because id rather do it once or twice a year on my choosing/news rather than have it interrupt when ive just started a 3 hour long task that can't be interrupted)

i dont know if i should get the pro :(

Is the RAM limit for the OEM limited verses the Pro Limit?

I know in previous versions there has been limits

Its crap..you have to prepay 3 months for sling to get it 50% off.

I get the distinct feeling that MS on purpose has kept the functionality of the home-version just at the level that Many many people will want to buy an upgrade to pro right after the "free" update is done.
I for one will not do the free upgrade on any other than one of my current home version machines to begin with. I will try the home version out, but if I read correctly my home network setup will not jive well with win 10 home. Actually, I currently have problems getting Win 8.1 home to work with my Samba servers whereas Pro and Win 7 have no problems at all. So... Yes, I have 10+ Windows PC's at home... It's a complicated history... :)

I don't have any confidence that Home users being force fed updates will stop them from being able to hang themselves with malware. I constantly get approached by friends that have 8.1, latest updates since it's default, and they still manage to get malware and scareware vecause MS doesn't have something better in place natively in Windows to deal with it.

There's just no excuse for rinky dink third parties - often just one guy working out of his house - being able to detect and prevent malware better than a multi-billion dollar "software company".
