I have a Win 7 Home upgrade key to Win 7 Pro, but it says that it can't be used for clean installs when I try to activate it. I have already tried the registry method. Is it not allowing me to install because it's an upgrade from Home to Pro cd key or because of something else?

Yeah the thing about upgrade cd is that you must have a certain OS in place before you can upgrade. You cannot do an upgrade if you have a blank hard drive.

So, in order to upgrade to Win 7 Pro, I need to have Win 7 Home installed?

You got it. You can use your upgrade disk to wipe your hard drive, but you can't use the same disk to recover it. I think it's pretty stupid personally.

I've used slmgr.vbs with success to. Use the /ipk switch to imput a product key. Use the /ato switch to activate the OS.

From an elevated cmd prompt type:

slmgr /ipk <product key with -, no brackets>

Press enter, then:

slmgr /ato

Press enter
