I was wondering if the SAMSUNG 850 EVO M.2 2280 1TB will work with my MSI Z97 Gaming 5 mobo? It says it supports M.2, but the Samsung 850 M.2 says it's M.2 2280. Three questions. 1 and most important. Will it work with this mobo? 2, What's the difference between M.2 and M.2 2280? Is that just the length? 3, The Z97 Gaming 5 says it supports M.2, but says nothing about M.2 2880 and this Samsung 850 EVO M.2 2880 says it's SATA III. The specs say this mobo supports M2. SATA up to 6Gb/s module, but it also says the M.2 port supports M.2 PCIe module up to 10Gb/s speed.

I think I'm confused about this Samsung M.2 being SATA III, but the mobo specs say the Z97 Gaming 5 supports M.2 PCIe module. Is this Samsung M2. 2880 a PCIe module?

Bottom line... Will my Z97 Gaming 5 mobo work with the SAMSUNG 850 EVO M.2 2280 SSD?

Don't quote me, but I don't think it will fit.

If you are hell bent on getting that drive you can always use an adapter if you find out it doesn't fit: https://www.amazon.com/Lycom-DT-120-PCIe-Adapter-Support/dp/B00MYCQP38

edit: It isn't the same connector. If you look at your M.2 slot it only has one notch whereas the 850 SATA M.2 drives have 2 notches. Don't know if that actually matters or not though. The Samsung 850 NVME (PCIe) drives only have one notch.

I wouldn't mind clarification from someone about the differences in the M.2 drives either.

From the Newegg page for your motherboard:

1x M.2 port*
M.2 port supports M.2 SATA 6Gb/s module
M.2 port supports M.2 PCIe module up to 10Gb/s speed**
M.2 port supports 4.2cm/ 6cm/ 8cm length module

* The SATA5 and SATA6 ports will be unavailable when installing a module in the M.2 port.
** M.2 PCIe interface only supports UEFI option ROM, NOT support legacy option ROM.

Sounds like the board can fit a 2280 module (ie 8cm/80mm). And it looks like it can handle the SATA-based drive you have. (If I am understanding the above correctly)

Also, the 22 indicates the module width (mm), the 80 the module length (mm).
