Will The New VR Gear Trip Up Older Gamers?

Wearing a cell phone, on your face, on an airplane.......

Now I am old....and that image is just full out nerd retard.

But why would you care about the opinion of strangers on a flight you will probably never see again in your life? I doubt anyone here that is honest can say they met a stranger and got laid on their last flight, but what is more feasible is to discretely watch 3D Barely Legal Sluts XVII on your flight to make the time pass more quickly.

I wish I got laid on a flight. I was hitting it off with a girl, then we had different plane transfers. Just not a convenient place to be banging and if you don't at least travel to the same city/area, it's just not happening.

I also wouldn't want a raging hard-on in a plane. Just a bad case of blue balls for however long your movie is.

I'm not an expert on this, but I heard somewhere that actual people are willing to do some pretty crazy stuff which might make the whole VR thing kinda a moot point.

I can get anything I want from my wife. Not a problem there. I am just curious how it would play out (how "interactive" it is, viewpoints). Nothing beats the real thing :D but, I just want to check it out.

I await the orgy of Youtube videos of people nearly killing themselves wearing VR headgear...even some idiot trying to eat and totally missing his mouth and dropping boiling hot soup in his lap, jumping up screaming and knocking over his monitor and headgear off his head costing several thousand dollars in damaged equipment and/or furniture will be fun.

Do I have issues?

I can't wait...

When I think of VR I'm reminded of the Stargate episode GateWorld, where what's left of the population of a planet happily spend all their time trapped in a virtual world.

Is that the one where the computer would reprogram their mind and make some of them randomly walk out into the poisonous atmosphere and die off?

Then sue for being unable to eat while using the equipment.

I'm sure someone will do something mundane with VR. Like virtual stores. Where you can walk around the store looking at crap on the shelf. I don't know why, but someone will do it. Hell, look at the old Playstation Home. That thing just screams crappy VR program and I wouldn't be surprised if Sony relaunches it for VR. They said they have no plans to do such, but it just wouldn't make sense not to.

Would be cool if they could make a camera set for streaming events cheap enough that family far away could join in; maybe that's too weird, but say someone is very far away, they could still "participate" in a holiday.

That'd just be a Skype call using Kinect or PS camera. No real way to make it VR, except some kind of robot with 360 degree cameras that you can control from the distant end.

That'd just end up being an expensive camera setup. I mean, there's the 360 degree go pro setup. That's 16 go pros and some other special stuff to tie them all together. That's probably easily $10k setup there.

There's the Freedom mount that's $1500 and you still need 6 Go Pros for it.

It depends on how pro-level you want to capture the event. The advantage of the go-pro rig is that you're getting fantastic high resolution quality video.

The Ricoh Theta S is a far less expensive alternative, and mounts to any tripod.

Me personally, I'm not a fan of Go-Pros. I hate the fisheye effect of them and even setting it to narrow, it still has a somewhat fisheye effect.

It's too bad that all the alternatives also use the 170 degree lense.

I think VR would be great as a shopping experience. It's really hard to get a sense of how something will look that you're buying online with just images. Being able to do something likes say VR dress yourself in something and see how it'll look would be really useful (IF it was the slightest bit accurate about the actual article of clothing). Then I'd know for sure how frumpy someone looks in a Three Wolf Moon shirt and wouldn't need to buy one just to realize it after the fact and want to return it, but not really have the motivation to do so because it's not that expensive and end up being lazy and keeping it in my "never wear this again" backup desperation dresser, forgetting that it even exists.

Yikes! Okay at least you're being honest about it. I mean there's like a vague half-curious thing about that over here too, but I think I'd rather not have tried. The real thing is kinda boring already so I can't imagine VR versions are better.

Report back to us on that, eh? Do it on a plane or train ride too, for maximum fun. Can't imagine it'll touch the real thing though on any level at all (emotional, much less (not at all) physical), but still an interesting thought.

Like I said......that is just plain full out retard. On a plane, really?

So while your immersed in your cell phone, the guy next to you steals all your valuables.

Just not my cup of tea.

Of course it's not going to show you how real things look. They want you to buy their crappy product. They'll just find new ways to make their crappy product look good, so you'll buy it.

I also keep around crappy clothes that I don't like. They turn into mechanics clothes, then eventually cut up into pieces and used as rags.

At least you get use out of those things you buy. I try really hard to add something to as a part of an outfit so it sort of disappears into the clothes I like, but mostly they just end up forgotten. I really need to clean out that dresser. It's just stuffed with things that should probably be donated since they've basically never been worn.

When you say older gamers, do you mean old, like me? (48) ;) I will not do VR unless it keeps the motion sickness away. Besides, I would love to be able to do one of those professional flight sims like the F18 done in a levitating capsule. You even have to be briefed before you can go into one of them.

For shirts I don't like, I just use them as undershirts. I have to wear collared shirts at work, so I wear button up short sleeves. I just put a random shirt underneath.

I don't think I can do that since I have to dress in business type stuff. It'd be hard to hide an old tee shirt in there somewhere. :(

Hi guys,

Just thought I would chime in here. I have access to both the Oculus CV1 prototype (CB) and the HTC Vive prototype. I don't think I could be considered too old of a gamer, but am just starting out my third decade on our wonderful planet.

I've been fortunate to play many of the games/apps/demos on these VR HMDs and also demo them to people of all ages. I can tell you with confidence that it doesn't matter how old you are, you will totally enjoy the experience. I should also admit I have some eye sight issues, not only with just poor vision but some less common eye muscle issues. Both HMDs work VERY well and I don't feel like my eye conditions affect my experience whatsoever. Also, with the Vive, you're definitely up and moving, so don't buy in to the whole "You have to sit still" thing. In fact, being up and moving is really what makes this the VR experience so incredible.

VR works WAY better and is way more immersive than you guys would believe, you'll just have to wait to try it out yourselves. :) The only caveat is VR requires some serious GPU power, so plan on a very high end video card for the time being. :D

So based on your experience with the tech, what would you say to the brain surgeons that flock to every VR thread to insist "bro its just the new 3DTV, its gunna fizzle"? These people have almost always never actually tried the tech for themselves mind you.

I have my own views on why the 3DTV analogy is apples-v-oranges and about 100 yards of naive or just intentionally obtuse, but I'd be curious to hear your take.

The only place for vr and 3d is porn. Gaming is more relaxing on plain old 2d.
