will Opteron 8xx (8-way) chips work in a Tyan 2-way board?

I want to get a pair of Opteron 8xx chips
(max 8-way) to use *some* day in a quad board,
but to use right *now* in a dual board,
the Thunder K8W (S2885 / S2885ANRF).
I've seen eBay 8xx sellers claim that this works.
A Tyan-USA support-rep says it won't.
A Tyan-Taiwan rep says it will.
Maybe the USA guys are just giving me
the "party line", maybe to sell quad boards.
Why would an 8-way chip work in a quad board and
not in a dual board?

My understanding of the differences between the different Opterons - 1xx, 2xx and 8xx chips is the number of synchronous HT links they have, they all have the same number of HT links - 3, but the 1xx only has 1 synchronous HT link, 2xx has 2 and the 8xx has all 3 running synchronously. Going by that and knowing that 8xx chips work in quad boards, it makes sense that they should work in dual boards as well.

Yeah the 8xx will work in a dualy board.. The 8xx is only marginaly more then the 2XX

Yeah... with that $450/chip price difference, I'd probably wait for 'someday' to come and prices to go down. If someday is more than 6mo from now, you'd probably save money by buying the 4 8XX chips then than getting 2 now & not replacing your 2XXs
