Will I benefit from a new card?

So I have an i7-930 based system with an AMD HD 5870. Currently driving a Dell 2407 display (1920x1200). I would like to get a new display a Dell 3011 (2560x1600), however concerned about the HD 5870 being able to drive that display at decent frame rates.
I noticed that I can not easily upgrade the cpu since it is a LGA1366 and would have to get a new MB to upgrade it, since 1366 CPU are not really sold short of a Xeon based chip.

Any suggestions?

A 5870 will struggle at 2560x1600 in a lot of game.

Just turn the settings down or game full screen at a lower res until you can afford a new card.

I can afford a new card. What I want to know is given the CPU would I benefit from a new card?

I think you'll be fine. A 670/7950 for example will be a huge improvement from a 5870. I think any bottleneck would be minimal.

My friend is running an i7-870 and just got a 7950 - he loves it. I don't think you'll regret it at all.
