Will 3GHz C2Qs ever come down to $250 or $200?

G'morning all,

Will we ever see $250 or $200 for a ~3GHz Core 2 Quad? I see the Q9550 at 2.83GHz is at $315 right now on Newegg, but will we get better pricing closer to EOL, now that Core i7 is out, or no change, or... what?

Reason is, I'd eventually like to upgrade my 3GHz C2D to a 3GHz C2Q for as cheaply as possible, to extend the life of my computer. So it's not a big deal, just something I'm wondering.

Thanks for reading!

I got my Q6600 for less then $200 over 6 months ago. OC'ed to 3GHz with just a bump in the FSB. Didn't touch anything else, and it hasn't crashed... ever. Something to think about.

I'm planning on doing the same. I'm betting at least another 6 months or more though. Need AMD to get the P2s out so they can make Intel drop their prices again. Plus retailers will be wanting to get rid of them once Lynnfield comes out. Frys motherboard package deal anyone?

Will they ever come down in price? Yes. Everything does eventually. When will that happen? Who knows.

maybe. x6800 was still hundreds of dollars more than the e6850 when it appeared on the market. users flocked to the new chip and the x6800 languished until intel bought them back. the 3ghz qx's are still thousands of dollars because the i7 965 is an entirely new socket. who knows how long they'll retain their value.

I picked up my q9450 from this forum used for $175, and it has been running very cool at 3.33GHz with a mild FSB boost.

q6600 at 3GHz easily.. I think the time is now.. the average joe just doesn't know it.

Any good place to look on overclocking the CPU? I was seriously considering the 9550 or 9650 or if intel was going to come out with something faster. I've never OC before, built 3 computers so far though (working on my 4th). I like the sounds of a Q6600 Overclocked to 3.0ghz for under $200.00

Any other differences I might notice between an OC Q6600 and a Q9550 or Q9650? (just built my father a Q9550.

Thanks for your help guys
Nate

You should be able to buy it at far less than that. $125 should not be that difficult to find used.

If you have a Fry's nearby, keep a lookout and you can get what I have plus a cheap ECS motherboard for $220 :)

AFAIK Intel will cut prices for its quads later this month ( 27th IMO ) , a one grade price cut.
So Q9650 $550 -> $316 , Q9550 $316-> $266 , Q9450 $266 -> $224 and so on.Q6600 will be ~$163.
Take it with a grain of salt.

Any Newer Core2Quad chips comming out? or everything going to be Core I7 from now on.

They prob will, but will go back up again a few years from now. You can find some sick deals on ebay, or your local frys/microcenter. Found mine for 275$, Saved a pretty penny rather buying from the egg.

Like others said, Overclocking can do the trick and save you some cash, thats if your open to that option.

Local frys had a Q9550 for $265, 10 bucks under what i got mine, go check it out if its at your store
