My friend just moved into his new house and just for kicks we hooked up me laptop and found 15 available hotspots! He can't affford broadband, so if he bought a 802.11g card and connected to a g network at about 50% signlal strength, would he be able to play multiplayer games? Ping times will be very important and lost connections will be game ending (he play WC3). Either way, it is gonna be fun to get free internet access from one of his dumb neighbors.

Boy this is wrong in so many levels, I don't even know were to begin.

Actually, i'll just stay out this one.

if thoes hotspots are provided by the apartment complex for resident use, then it is fine, however most likely they are unsecure resident wireless routers, that is however not legal

Answer is no. He will probably ping 1000+. Wireless gaming doesn't work at all. The time between communicating between the laptop and the wifi hotspots is too long. Only way to do it is by LAN line or cable. And stealing your internet from your neighbors is illegal in case you haven't noticed....
