Why would one go dual core when 2 opterons are cheaper?

actually multi processor systems gain little when it comes to gaming over their single cpu counterparts.

thats not what i asked. i asked whats the point in going dual core when it seems two opterons is the cheaper option.
 
How do you figure it's cheaper? Two 2.2GHz Opterons is ~$900, where the dual-core X2 4400+ is ~$600.

not when you factor in a terribly expensive motherboard, regstered ram, and the fact that the 4400+ (two 1mb cores) run at 2.2ghz and have improved features over a pair of 248's, while being significantly cheaper ($580 vs $890). communication between teh two cores is also greatly reduced in a dual core system. not to mention you get no OC'ing options with opterons.

If you go opteron, you've gotta spend extra cash for an expensive dual socket 940 mobo, and ecc registered ram. Gaming performance with this sort of setup would be lacking, and most of us standard non-server users will be prepared to get the dual core 939 chips because we all ready have 939 mobo's.
 
Why get a dual core Opty instead of 2 single core?

Becuase you can get dual dual core and have 4 cores :p

who cares how much it costs? I make enough for a living :)

Because it's an easy drop-in upgrade to double your CPU power and SysAdmin's time is expensive enoug as it is without having to swap in a motherboard with more available sockets.
