Why some people just need a power rig.

A question came up on a thread that someone posted about their new rig that is overly insane by some people's standards. Some one posted a reply saying "why would anyone need a rig like that?" I can tell you why!

Some of us PC/Mac users, don't just use our computers for Games, Internet, Downloading or Porn. Some of us use our computers for much much more. Like someone like myself, I happen to be a animator, both computer and traditional. I frequently use 3d Studio Max, and it is perhaps one of the most resource hungry consumer apps. When you have Millions of Polygons, and tons of effects and lighting to render, a Super Machine would cut time on rendering. For instance I have this animation I did, its only about 45 seconds, but it took over 3 weeks to render out. Now if I had a Dual Xeons with hyper threading enabled I may have been able to cut that render time down to maybe just a week. or even a few days. Digital Video Editing is another reason some one would need a great machine to work on. Every 5 minutes of Raw DV footage is about 1 gig of information. If you ever used a DV editing program you know, working with those files cause a general computer to lag .... alot. Aside from that, Next Gen games will take whatever you throw at it example DOOM III and Half Life 2. Those of you who think your gonna be able to play those games with your 1Ghz Proc and 512MB of RAM and your 64meg video cards, then you'll be visiting LAG city. Finally I would just like to say, that just cause some one is building an insane PC better than yours, don't doubt the man, he just may well need it.

Word Up. =P
Besides, its a hobby, does a man really need a car w/ 600hp when he can never drive it to its fullest capablities. Yes he does.

And this deserved it's own thread because...?

Now I'm not one to name names, but let STL do what he pleases.
It's obvious that the thread was just to boast about how much he's spending on what he percieves his ultimate rig.

The issue is that he asked for advice on the rig, and people gave it to him. He doesn't need to take that advice, of course, but it seems the thread wasn't *really* about asking, more about showing off.

I wish I had the patience to read that entire thread

The way I see it is its cool if you can afford an all out rig. Nobody should bash you for it just because they think it's overkill. Especially if it's NOT overkill, but more than that person would (or could) make use of. Maybe it's envy/jealousy that people bash him?

Like the horsepower analogy... it's not about meeting one's needs, it's about meeting one's "wants" :p

Let me give you the cliff notes version. (Its been a slow day here at work)

1) Big list of hardware that STL needs "checked for compatability"
2) Some give legitimate suggestions on how to make said list better/more cost effective
2b) Others flame STL about how he should get a life/donate his money to charity/give money to me
3) STL bitches about how his proposed PC is greatest of all time
4) People flame STL some more
5) Mod closes the thread.
6) ...
7) Profit

I don't think anyone has ever doubted that there are legitamate uses for high horse power PCs. There is always lots of data to be comptuted - both at home and at work.

it wasnt his comp that people flamed him for, it was his utter disregard for what others suggested and his usual piss-poor attitude towards anyone questioning his "superior" choices.

Agreed. His choice of components were somewhat strange or even poor, but telling him so and explaining why isn't flaming. Some people took it too far, and I know some of us got tired of him not listening and as some interpreted it, bragging. In reality if I had chosen some of those components for his goals, I'd be too embarrassed to brag.

I myself have needs for very powerful workstations, however I'm not building one at this very moment because the technology I'm interested in hasn't matured.

I want to see where Opterons go, and I have specific reasons to wait and see what happens with the Longhorn operating system.

For the moment "dos" in my sig does fine for most of the scientific imaging I do, and is plenty for photography.

I doubt this thread will go anywhere though, I think it should be locked.

I hope B.B.S. gets this one :p. A lot of people have no need for 3ghz+ and 1GB+ of RAM. For what most people use their computers for, a 1GHZ PIII and 512MB of RAM would be more than plenty. Unless you're doing resource hungry work, you don't need all that power. Windows XP can only be so fast.

I don't think 3DS Max and Consumer should be in the same sentence.

Also, I edit long format DV, up to 2 hours long, and there is no lag when editing on my P3 733.
There is lag when you are zoomed out on the timeline and show the audio graph though, but you normally don't need it showing when you are zoomed out.

I can vouch for needing a lot of processor for 3D since I used to do 3D animation for a living with Lightwave 3D back on my Amiga/Toaster system. It made life a lot easier when it finally came out on PC since a Pentium 100mhz would render almost 4 times faster than the fastest Amiga which at the time was an Amiga 4000 with the Motorola 68060 @ 50mhz on the Cyberstorm card.
