Why Pirates Failed To Prevent The Avengers' Box Office Record

The studios should be mad over this blatant piracy. As happy as they are with their record profit, the real record was stolen from them, for if those pirates had no alternative then this movie would have made at least half a billion dollars over the weekend.

$10 at the door. $10 for a bag of popcorn and soda....then you sit in a chair for 30-45 minutes being forced to watch previews for movies you would probably never see anyway. The movie is about to start then the couple with the giant hairdo sits in front of you and spends then entire flick making out or SMSing on their phone....finally you get your 90 minutes of no-plot and lots of "special-effects" that are so common today to not deserve the prefix "special".

At the DMV while there isn't popcorn or soda, you spend hours waiting in seats with all manner of people you don't want to meet waiting for your turn at the desk.

There are certain commonalities.

You sound poor.

Ticket prices, while pretty high, don't bother me as much as concession prices. That shit is insane. I know that's how theaters make money and blah blah blah, but IMO it just encourages people to sneak shit into the theater.

TorrentFreak must be stupid if they can't answer that question.

CoD: MW3 and BF3 sold millions. However, they are also some of the most downloaded games (pirated) in the Internet as well. They simply would've sold more copies if piracy were impossible (which is not the case). Avengers would've done slightly better at the box office if it were impossible to get a downloaded copy.

Piracy will always have a slight impact (1 download does NOT equal 1 lost sale). But a blockbuster will be a blockbuster.

Wait...you don't sneak shit into the theaters?

Or are they high BECAUSE people sneak shit in and few buy? The old chicken/egg argument. I generally stick to the $1 refill cup, maybe a large popcorn if the kids want it, but yeah I'm there with you.

Never said I didn't. ;) But, I like to support theaters (especially local ones), but when they charge $8 for a large soda it's just completely off-putting.

Possibly, but I got the impression that theaters had very little profit margins on actual ticket sales. Could be mistaken. And I love the $1 cup refills, but we've only had those back in Spokane at Regal, nothing like that around here unfortunately.

good to hear the movie didn't suck. I don't usually care for Whedon but enough people seem to give it the thumbs up.

Still, I will wait for the blu-ray. In this day and age I cannot image any reason to go to a theater (save IMAX, but thats overpriced).

nice to see it poke holes in the piracy theories...but seriously people still watch cam rips?

After watching the movie in the theater and coming home I may have slipped and fell onto the floor, my face landing directly on an already playing cam rip. What's odd is my son's face fell right next to mine and sadly we both saw a few scenes again that we had just enjoyed at the theater. My son missed the Galaga reference so thankfully someone left a running cam rip on our floor to fall on to.

Sorry, I was cheap-shotting an obvious troll. I did not intend to start a conversation regarding the business structure of the movie theater industry.

Would if I could. I don't have a purse, though, and I don't usually feel like stashing Raisinets in my boxers.

The movie was great, contrary to a certain Times journalist's thoughts. Box office proves it, reviews are good, complaints are minor at best, usually that they liked the movie but wanted to love it.

Avengers is a tough sell, always has been, you have wildly different heroes (and anti-heroes) with massive difference in power levels, makes it very hard to pull together. Balancing personalities, powers, and villains makes it a monumental task, one that I didn't think could be done, and am happy to be proven wrong.

The balancing of hero powers has always been my problem, they either underpower ones like Hulk and Thor, or over-power ones like Cap and Hawkeye. This movie struck a good balance, almost perfect mix of the different power levels, making it feel like they all fought effectively.

The MPAA will totally deny any of this and still claim till they are blue in the face that py-rating their stuff is killing the universe.

I can't stand watching movies with people. All the laughing, coughing, shadows of the people around me puts off the movie experience for me. I'll either wait a couple months till it comes out at the dollar theater where it averages around 10 viewers per theater, or wait till the bluray rip comes out...........and watch it at home on my 50" plasma where I can tell the audience (kids and wife) to pipe it down or go to bed, where I can pause it and go pee.

I'm very selective about which movies I see in the theaters, the prices have gotten insane. But this is one movie that has to be seen on the big screen. Beyond a doubt,it's the best superhero film made yet. The Hulk steals the show, his scene with Loki is hilarious.
It's kind of ironic that Marvel's biggest hit has no game tie in,I understand why they cut ties with Sega, their games just didn't measure up,but they're missing out on some lucrative merchandising profits now.

I would say that I still preferred the original Iron Man movie.

Dont know why but I can watch that over and over. I guess I'm in love....with Tony Stark's workshop!

That's why you always bring a girl with you. Bonus points if she carries one of those gigantic "hobo" bags. :D

The explanation is THQ Studio Australia was supposed to be developing the game but due to THQ's financial issues the studio was shut down.

Avengers was excellent, but it only manages to be runner up to Iron Man 1 which was a fair amount better. RDJ has to be the best casting decision in a super hero movie I've ever seen.

Its a shame that Thor, Hulk, and Iron Man 2 just weren't as good, otherwise this could have ended up being in the same league as The Lord of the Rings for me. Also a shame they seem to have problems holding onto cast between movies.

Get a purse. Go to the store before you hit the movies. Fill it up. As long as it matches your outfit (you might have to find a good one while at the store), they shouldn't ask to look inside. :)

Some movies are meant to watch in theaters, this is one of them. A cam wouldn't do the movie justice. I recommend anyone that watched the cam version, even though you know the movie, you haven't experienced the movie. It's a big screen movie.

I think piracy hurts shitty films. Why pay $50 for a family of four to watch a shitty movie?

But, shitty films have also killed my motivation to go to the theater. Even if I don't pirate movies (I haven't in quite a long time), I wouldn't go watch too many of them. I've been burned WAY too many times with really shitty movies that I paid a bunch for. An $8 ticket for We Bought a Zoo? Times 4 people + popcorn and soda. I'm glad it was a rental. Not a bad movie, but I wouldn't have paid to watch it in theaters. Too many movies like that (or worse). I have to have extremely high expectations with a movie before I'll watch it in theaters. I have to expect a 10/10 or maybe a 9/10. Anything less and it's a no go. I used to hit the movies every weekend. Nothing worth going to anymore, and I'm not taking the chance on some of the less popular ones anymore.

I'm not a film critic or pussy pinky up, but I do have some standards. I go to be entertained. Avengers did that. So did Hunger Games. Before that, I think it was Despicable Me, which I loved (I'm a big kid).

"The Avengers" = best super hero movie ever!

I it breaks "Titanic"'s record, but I doubt it will break "Avatar"'s record.

Wait sheep. How does one know the movie is good before seeing it?

Sheep? Wow. You're the most independent person and most unique person ever... Just like everyone else.

I went and watched it, like hundreds of thousands of other 'sheep'. Baaaaa.

Damn, people like you piss me off. Just because something is great and attract a lot of people doesn't mean people that follow or do that are 'sheep'. You're using the Internet like so many other sheep. PC or Mac? Sheep. You drive a car? Sheep. Bike? Sheep. You wear shoes? Sheep. Even indie manufacturers want followers and rely on word of mouth and reputation. Follow someone elses recommendation and you're a sheep. Real nice thinking there, dude.

BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Agreed. Plus the fact that when I was a kid movies were like $3.50 and there was a local theater with a bit older movies (i.e. just out of theaters but before VHS/DVD release) with tickets for a buck.

So it's ok to sneak candy into a theater but it's not ok to pirate a movie. Sounds like a double standard to me.

No shitty films hurts shitty films. The family of four is not going to pirate a shitty film just for the sakes of watching it to see how shitty it is. People who pirate every movie out there (including the shitty ones) need to be removed from the equation as far as lost sales.

If anything piracy probably only hurts the non-blockbusters that don't necessarily need a big screen to enjoy, but is enjoyable enough that you want to watch it (just not pay $50 to see it)
