Why I'm Returning Google Glass

Apparently paying $1500 for the privilege of being a Google Glass beta tester isn't all it is cracked up to be.

In the end, though, that wasn't enough. Despite what Larry Page said, I actually do prefer to pull my phone out of my pocket. It's easier for me and less awkward than looking up and trying to manipulate this device and see the small screen. All that said, I still believe the future of computing will involve wearables of some kind, but I don't think Glass is going to be the killer device. It feels very prototype-ish and I can't help but feel that it's the precursor to something better Google might even be working on now as we try these.

For $1500 I would probably agree.

For $100-150 I could see it being a lot more enticing.

We need chip implants already. I just need something that can help me remember things. My memory is terrible.

I thought it was $1500 for developers and creative people to mess with it, not consumers

I still don't believe "wearable" tech is the future. The dick Tracy communicator watch stopped being cool ages ago. Unless something like glasses with a full HUD that covers the whole lens can be operated without vocal commands or putting your hand by you face, I just don't see the use.

I just want augmented reality glasses or an attachment, i could care less about the camera and recording capability....

If your standard consumer fucking hates it when would a developer want any interest in developing something for a product that no one will use?

That is true, but this is the same internet that make a shit storm out of the NSA findings about products they voluntary signed up for, now allowing those same companies to deliver content to some chipset in their head.

I can definitely see Google Glass selling to sports and action enthusiasts looking to capture the moment on video, but I can't see it doing very well unless it's prices < $300...

It's not yet ready for consumers. That is why it is in beta and aimed at developers. To create apps and refine the experience.

Sounds like this guy probably shouldn't have bought this device in the first place. This really isn't for an end user expecting a good value for his $1500. I am pretty sure the price is intentionally set this high to deter regular users. The end consumer version will most likely be much more affordable.

Google? That's cute.

That is what we need. Full screen in front of both eyes. It can use some sort of transparent overlay, so you can surf the web with a view that fills your eyes, but you can still see the road you are driving down at 75MPH. And perhaps 3D support.

I can picture myself wearing this in a meeting and watching a movie while someone drones on about some stupid reports.

$1500 for the privilege of puchasing an unfinished product and then finishing it for free. Free labor, great idea Google.

Huh?

These are for early looks with developers so they can get a jumpstart on creating software. If anything that is fucking awesome instead of releasing an item and expecting full developer support.

Of course it does, IT IS A PROTOTYPE.

I'm not sure I'm in to the Glass thing at all, but buying a development prototype and expecting a finished product is idiocy of the highest degree. Either this guy is a complete retard, or he just bought it so he could write this article complaining about it.

OMG are you out of your mind? People can't even just talk to someone while they're driving without crashing into stuff when their eyes are on the road, let alone drive somewhere safely while they surf for porn. It's bad enough that basically every single guy on the planet thinks he's a good driver and is really just terrible and takes stupid risks -- they don't need more stuff to distract them. Maybe if there were self-driving cars though...

they already have cars that can parallel park themselves...self-driving cars is next

I'm excited about that too. I know a lot of companies are kinda developing the stuff. As a person who has hit a lot of things (trees, dumpsters, those cement blocks they put in front of parking spots for no reason , trash cans, my parents' mailbox, and other stuff, I think the idea is a really good one.

This author is an idiot, it is a developers prototype... i.e. it is being released to people interested in developing software for it. That is why it costs $1500 and why they were not selling them to the general public. As for whether it will catch on or not, who knows? I kind of like the idea of the Recon Jet, integrating a camera and data HUD into my sports glasses (although it looks a bit big a clunky), but the appeal is to a fairly small segment of people.

Those dang TPS reports!
