Why does my BlueRay rip look like crap?

I have my Casino Royale ripped to my hard drive. Is it just me being picky, or does this look like crap?

I have CoreAVC installed and working properly. This is on my gaming system (Q6600, 8800 Ultra)...I have yet to get my HTPC playing the movie properly, but that's another story.

How did you get the movie onto your harddrive? If you just used AnyDVD and copied the files, then it will look identical to the movie and you will get no quality loss from the bluray source.

Perhaps the frame you picked was just a bad scene quality wise. Here is a grab from a 720p rip i made last year which doesnt seem that much different at first glance to yours, it has a video bitrate of 7000k~, but i was just getting to grips with AVC encoding then, so if i did it again it would look slightly better.

Doesnt the Blu-ray have DRM that makes it record in 480p if someone copies it or tries ?

If the ICT token (i think) is used then the disc will only output at 480p for component output if there isnt a full HDCP path from disc to display. However this doesnt matter for making backups etc where you can use any of the simple tools and just make a perfect 1:1 rip of any bluray movie today.

It's the scene in the movie, the rest look better. They were probably trying to make him look more rugged.

It's more than just that scene. It seems to really show it's shittiness on lighter colors. Here's another screen shot. What bothers me most is that these fuzzy areas look like they are "Sizzling" as the movie plays, they fizzle as the movie plays, drawing attention to the lack of sharpness. I've circled the areas that show what I'm talking about, although if you ask me, the entire scene looks like shit.

CoreAVC pro has options:

Deinterlacing:
None (Weave)
Blend
Bob
Hardware

Deblocking:
Standard
Skip When Safe
Skip Always

And a checkbox for "Aggressive Deinterlacing"

What should all this be set at on my Q6600/8800 Ultra machine?

The only one which is going to make a difference quality wise is the deblocking, which should be set to standard. Any kind of deinterlacing is only going to take effect on interlaced content, almost every single HD disc is progressive, so it doesnt matter, its more for HDTV streams.

Your correct, but overall i think the movie balances itself out picture quality wise. Its a lot better than what the studios are doing to a increasing number of new movies now, using heavy DNR filters that almost remove the point of HD completely.

Case in point, look at this bluray of scarymovie 4, where has the detail gone?

Another example of just how bad it is, here on Golden Compass, look at the difference between the Bluray screengrab and one from a Bluray trailer, look at the fur on the bear as an example. Just terrible :( , why does the trailer have signficant PQ quality compared to the movie?

Yep i think the OPs picture is fine, its just he chose 2 bad scenes were PQ was low IMO.

I doubt he's using a rip as he still has the blackborders. Normally any sane person removes them, unless there trying to make a AVCHD disc.

If you are using a rip that you made yourself then you can just compare the exact same frame number from the source.

I don't know, he doesn't have a clue as to what he's doing so it could very possible that he didn't remove the black borders simply cause he doesn't know how.

My screenshots are from fullscreen view...the blackbars aren't there if I view it in windowed mode.

Did you create the rip yourself? If you did then you can compare the quality of the encode yourself by simply taking identical screens from the same frame, if you did and the resulting video was 12GB then unless you made a real screw up somewhere its probably going to be hard to tell the difference in some scenes between that and the source.

I ended up encoding Curse of the Black Pearl with several different bitrates from my bluray and ive been very surprised by the amount of change between the source and some of the bitrates ive been encoding at. For instance 720p at a low bitrate of 2Mbit looks miles better than i imagined . Once ive finished all the jobs i'll create a page and post a link.
