P4 2.4ghz @ stock
P4PB Ultra
1gb corsair PC3500 ram
PNY 6800 128mb @ 400/760 and the 2 extra pipes unlocked.

I play a lot of CS:S and I average only 30fps, to me this sucks. I run this:
1280x1024, All settings on high, reflect world, AA: None, AF: Trilinear

3dmark2001: 10951 (did 11k best once)

I want 80 fps, what do I need to get??? -or- wtf is wrong with my pc???

thanks

Well its because God doesnt like you.

If you dont like that answer, its your processor. HL2 is bigger on the processor.

lmao.. it's definetely your proc... is that even a northwood? i doubt it... and to answer your question about getting 80 fps.... fx-55 lol... upgrade your proc to something higher... or better yet.. athlon 64

ur cpus probably bottlenecking your card, and i woudnlt expect 80fps with that

It definitely looks like your CPU is bottlenecking your CSS fps. I get around 10k on my 3DMark03 as well, with a 6800nu at 385/750. However, I can average 72fps on the stress test at 1280x1024 with 2xQS and 16xAF. This is all with an AMD64 3000+ at 2.2GHz.

It's not the damn CPU look at his 3DMark01 score. I have a P4 2.4B @ 2.8 with a 9800 Pro and I get a 17000. At his settings mentioned I got 74.9 FPS in the VST. What do you get v6maro?

What Nvidia drivers are you using? The 71.20's are suppose to be sweet.

There is a thread around here about what ForceWare drivers work in HL2 the best.

i think he got his 3dmark01 and 03 mixed up then... he said he got 10k on 01.. looks like 03 to me :)

Here's my frank evaluation.

P4 2.4ghz @ stock (This is not a fast processor. It's a Northwood but has no HT and a 400MHz FSB.)
P4PB Ultra (This is far from a modern motherboard.)
1gb corsair PC3500 ram (This ram won't reach it's full potential on your board and processor)
PNY 6800 128mb @ 400/760 and the 2 extra pipes unlocked. (This card is fast and powerfull enough for most games, but it does not make "Amazing" 3D Mark scores. It's the Ultra's and GT's that do that.

I play a lot of CS:S and I average only 30fps, to me this sucks. I run this:
1280x1024, All settings on high, reflect world, AA: None, AF: Trilinear (Your overall system combo is the reason for this. Your CPU, motherboard and memory timings (which are motherboard limited) are the cause of this.

3dmark2001: 10951 (did 11k best once) (This benchmark is showing its' age.) 3D Mark 2001 doesn't show that much difference between a 9800Pro and a 6800GT. Why? It doesn't use the newer video card features. It's a pretty good indicator of CPU speeds but little else anymore. 3D Mark 2003 would be better to use for comparing your systems against others.

I want 80 fps, what do I need to get??? -or- wtf is wrong with my pc???

You need a newer faster processor. An Intel Pentium 4 3.0C on a Dual Channel capable motherboard with your ram if it's in 2x512MB chips and that would help tremendously. A socket 478 mobo and 3.0C would be cheap. With your ram you could overclock a 3.0C to 3.4GHz EASY. You'd have plenty going for you with that video card.

Some would recommend going with the higher end video card like the GT or Ultra. However I don't think it would help much if any. A 2.4GHz CPU, limits your games more than your video card at this point. Get past 3.0GHz and get Dual channel memory support and then worry about a newer video card if your still not happy.

Install your mobo drivers. If that dosnt work, format.
You should be getting much much better preformance with that setup.

I'd say something is wrong with your chipset drivers. Make sure AGP texture acceleration is on. There is a few things you can check too. Go into dxdiag and see if everything is okay in there. Make sure there aren't any conflicts ore missing drivers or anything. His processor isn't up to date but it's certaintly not a problem. With a ti4600 and my old athlon 1.33GHz, I was getting 9500 on 3dmark 2001. I don't know why everyone thinks it's immediatly the processor. That system should be scoring at least 13-14K in 2001 with a 2.4A with a 6800. My current system hits 18.5-19k in 3dmark 2001. I don't really run any of the benchmarks anymore, however.

i was browsing through the futuremark score to see what kind of scores 2.4ghz p4 with 6800 are getting and heres what i f ound:

the slowest 2.4ghz (533fsb) systems i could find...
2.4B (533fsb) with p4b, 512MB ram, and 6800 with everything at stock (no overclocking, no unlocking of video card pipelines) got 12,000
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=8107861

one of the faster 2.4ghz (533fsb) systems i could find..
dell 2.4 p4 (533fsb) system, 1024mb ram, and a 12x5 6800 got 14,000
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=8256169

your system probably needs some bios tweaking and possibly a fresh OS installation with the newest drivers (mobo and video card)

the 35fps I am talking about is during actual gameplay, it doesnt go much above 50.

Thanks for the help, would an Abit IS7-G Max Advanced II be the board of choice here with a nice 3.2 or so?

They were installed before anything else (besides the OS) This was a fresh build.

Where do I find the AGP texture accel?

the 2.4ghz northwood came in a 400mhz fsb version AND a 533mhz fsb version. if he got a 533mhz fsb that wouldnt be too bad or if he got a 400mhz version he could overclock if he chooses (3.2ghz *might* be possible).

the p4pb ultra isnt modern but its not far from modern. it still supports a 533mhz fsb and ddr333 and since he has 1gb corsair pc3500 he could run the ram at tight timings (if his board supports it)

the 6800 with 2 extra pipes unlocked CAN do wonders for 3dmark =)

my friend has a similar system.

if i were you, i would try to overclock the system as it still has a lot of potential (youre gonna replace it so why not try?) assuming you do have the 400mhz fsb version of the cpu you could try to aim for 3.2ghz =)

im confused, i didnt notice it before (did u just add it?) but heres what ur sig says

P4 2.4b @ 3.42GHz - Asus P4B533 board @ 190fsb 1.525 Vcore
Vapochill PE Titanium.
512mb of Corsair PC3500C2 ram.
Asus GF4 TI4600
Audigy 2 Platinum
IBM 36.7GB U160 SCSI 15,000rpm
WD 80gb 7200rpm, Maxtor 60gb 7200rpm
Pioneer DVD-RW 4x/2x // CD-R/RW, 16x8x32x
Logitech Z-680 speakers
Antec True 550w PSU
some fans, some LED's, a window, and a cold cathode.

which do you have?? if youre running ur 2.4B that fast i wouldnt invest in a new motherboard/cpu....

The P4PB Ultra from what I've read on it doesn't support Dual Channel memory. The ram, if still running single channel (I know that board isn't dual channel) then he's losing performance because of that. That board will support tighter timings, but the P4 generally doesn't bennefit much if any from that. It wants more raw bandwidth. Dual Channel is what allowed the DDR chipsets to reach the performance of the RDRAM ones. Or at least get close enough.

I am also aware of both 2.4GHz processors, 533 and 400MHz versions. Either way, at stock speeds that's a huge bottleneck when gaming.

I have 3 boxes sitting here...hehe

2 running 2.4b's and an empty vapo box I am trying to sell for part $ LOL.

anyhoo, the sig is an old setup, the P4B533 is gone.

I am now runing a VIA P4PB Ultra

It runs at 400mhz for the memory, and the 2.4b chip is 533.

i was actually gonna ask him that =p im jealous (of the firehawk i mean) xD

so what kinda MB should i go with with a 3.2E 1mb cache p4 prescott?

Since when wasn't there a 2.4 800? I have a 2.4C 800Mhz Northwood with HT in my work computer.

Why do you only have 2 extra pipes unlocked? Or do you mean 4 extra? 6800nu's are 12 pipe oem and 16 unlocked. Post your 3dmark 05 scores to.

LKS
edit* my 2.4C oc's like crap. But I blame the lousy MSI bios for that.

2.4 800 =overclocking king hehehe

I wanted a northwood, not too expensive with HT, so that's was my pick. Too bad its for my work computer in a shitty mobo, onboard radeon 9000 type video and single channel, poor crippled baby.

plus it has a stick of HyperX PC4000 memory. My Valueram stick was bad and hyperX was on sale, so I got it, and the mobo refuses to overclock much.

I got 19K on 3dmark2k1 and 11k on 3dmark2k3. running a 6800GT and a p4 2.4C but it's oc'ed :p

I've done the ICAGS mod and I've got Nitto Drag 555R's on the back. Wheels are painted black. Other than that nothing. My next mods for it are probably going to be headers and eventually heads and a cam.

What headers are you going to go with? I went with pacesetters and I have stage 2 heads and a large cam.
