• Some users have recently had their accounts hijacked. It seems that the now defunct EVGA forums might have compromised your password there and seems many are using the same PW here. We would suggest you UPDATE YOUR PASSWORD and TURN ON 2FA for your account here to further secure it. None of the compromised accounts had 2FA turned on.
Once you have enabled 2FA, your account will be updated soon to show a badge, letting other members know that you use 2FA to protect your account. This should be beneficial for everyone that uses FSFT.

Why can't we edit thread titles?

Why is it that we can not alter the title of a thread once it is posted? This is especially helpful in the FS/FT forum but might be helpful in any forum. For instance, I just had a thread where I was looking to buy two items. I found one and could not edit it to read only looking for one item. I know this is possible on some other forums that I visit so I was wondering what the likihood is that we might get that feature her?

Oh, and if that is already something we can do and I am just too ignorant to know how, please forgive me! :p

Search a bit and you'll find the answer. This has been discussed quite extensively. Basically, you can change the title in the first 10 minutes after posting, but after that you have to pm a mod to change it for you. Basic reasoning is that it would just cause confusion if everyone could change their thread titles. Also, it is a forum-wide change so it can't just be enabled for fs/ft, for example.

Ok, I searched a little better and you are right, it has been discussed. After having read some of the threads talking about this, I have to respectfully disagree that it would be confusing for people.

First off, people who follow a particular thread (the ones who care about it) usually have subscribed to that thread. Changing the name is not going to change their subscription.

Second, it would one less task that moderators had to worry about since they have enough on their hands with controlling thread crappers and other things.

Finally, if it possible to allow a thread to be changed in the first ten minutes then I would hope that it could be set to only allow the title to be changed on a specified frequency, meaning that people couldn't just change their thread title every few minutes to bump it back to the top.

Of course, I love these forums and will visit them no matter what. :)

In the beginning of these forums, the thread title and just about everything else were changable by the user giving them carte blanche permissions. As time passed each of the privileges were abused so limitations had to be put into place to keep the forum under control. It would be nice to find a workaround to permit the FS/T forum to be exempted from the universal setting and it is being explored.

We will not change anything. Thread closed.
Don't be suprised when you see that. That's usually the answer for anything in regards to changing the forum

Not a bad thing, but such a big forum is hard to change without breaking things or running into unforseen problems.

Changes are made here, but most are made to keep the board up and running as fast as it can. Many of the suggestions are just not feasible on a forum of this size, many are personal wishes, many we just won't do because they cause an Administrative nightmare, and some that are under consideration. This forum is for suggestions and help, not ask and 'not you shall receive'. If it is deemed important and will not wreck the forums, the possibility of change is a reality. The threads are closed after the initial question is answered because after that point it becomes an extention of an AOL chatroom.

I also wish we could edit thread titles especially in the FS/FT area. That would be a great thing.

It'd be nice, but that issue is why you are allowed to close your first thread and open a new one with a different title.

I understand the potential for problems that a change like this could create. I am glad to hear that a solution is being researched. It sounds like many of the forum members would love to see this change implemented. Does [H] ever poll members to ask about what they would like to see? Finally, is this the "official" place to request information on changes like this?

Yes, this is the correct forum for all forum related problems and suggestions. This is as close to polling the members as it gets. Most requests are personal driven in nature and are not necessarily in the best interest of the forum operation. After over 5 years in operation, I think Kyle has the forums pretty much the way he wants them and plans little in the way of changes unless needed to better the board's performance.

Personally, as long as the mods don't mind changing titles on fs/ft or whatever threads (which they do pretty quickly in my experience!), I would prefer for threads to keep the same name. I have a whole ton of subscriptions to different threads and it would be near-to-impossible to figure out which was which if the titles kept changing. Plus, if we're allowed to change titles whenever we wanted, you know there would be some jackoff who kept putting 'F*CK THIS STUPID F*CKING __insert brand/product here___' and the mods would have to constantly search for this more than they already to.

Just my $0.02

everyone's thoughts are noted. thanks for sharing them. and yes we do still change things, but a quick search for "dead horse" would have likely pointed you to this thread's long lost ancestors....
