Why can't I [WE?] finish a game?

This might be just me, well, no because I have talked to a few people, friends as well, who have the same problem. Which is... we buy games, never complete them. I have 6 games here sitting in front of me, all played partly and not finished. Anyone else having this problem?

I think I have made a guild wars character about 6 times now. Not past 10.
Can't finish UT. Can't finish POP:WW, ect. ect.

some thoughts...

A) MMORPGS - Ruin single player games, because your mind is used to lvling gradification and long term overall playability.
B) Same old, Same old. Another shooter anyone? no? How about an RTS? no? oh.. well then...
C) INSTINT GRATIFICATION, for some reason, hearing an opening story makes me want to puke. I used to love this. Now I just find myself hoping on CS:S for some "fun".

I just can't seem to get into a game... just curious if anyone else sufferes from this?

I`m exactly the same way. I get bored real easy and find things repetitive very easily. Even the game which I thought is the best game ever, HL2, I didnt finish.

i found san andreas a worthy game to continue. I actually like the story, since it humors me to a bit. I don't know, but this will probably be the only game I will complete (or at least the first). BTW, i'm like 11% done with the game and i still have a long way to go. Try this game out.

lately, i find myself happiest playing Q*bert on my cellphone...maybe I need to get a psp or something because I only game when I am taking a shit these days.

Anyway, I have MANY games that I have purchased but never finished. It takes a very very VERY special game for me to finish it...My problem is that I'll get burnt out on it too quickly. I overdose on it and then it leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth and it takes a month or so before I pick it up again.

BTW: QBERT ROXORZ!!!!

Yea out of all the games ive played the only game that ive actually beaten was FF7

Its rare that I finish any game also, I believe its because of a few factors (YMMV):

1) Games have been done over... and over... and over.... and once more.

2) Your getting older, and it gets harder to get as excited about a game as when you were younger

3) Your likes have changed.

I find its really hard for me to get into a game enough to want to finish it, HL2 did that for me recently and it was money well spent. But before that it would have to be the Max Payne series (although I wasn't that excited in the second as I was in the first), and then Zelda: OOT on N64.

yes well the only game i enjoyed till the end and finishing was MAFIA
the rest like GTA :SA i was hoping for it to finish sooner

i usually beat games, but lately i've had such a lot of them i can't finish any. I beat hl2 quickly, but i never beat halo 2. i'm still in the middle of GTA:SA, but i just got it on pc and it's a huge game, so i see why i haven't beat it just yet. i got like 15 hours into star wars kotor2 and haven't finished that, it's waaaaay longer than the first kotor. uhmmmm. i started wind waker several months ago, haven't beat that. RE4, that game i did beat, and it was awesome. i've been trying to get through some of the series cups on trackmania sunrise, but they are super freakin hard. i've been at 98% on burnout 3 for like a year, some of those last goals are impossible i say. i still have metroid prime 1 and 2 to start, eternal darkness, bards tale i'm half way through, resident evil zero, 1, 2, 3, and code veronica i want to play through again since i just got them on gamecube. fight night round 2, i've won several belts but there are two unified belts i haven't gotten around to yet.

i get battlefield 2 tomorrow afternoon, damnit, i'm never going to finish these games.

well HERE IS WHAT I THINK damit

Games back in the day. even with crappy grapchics where more fun the games today. I mean hell. Jedi knight 1 was the best game I ever played cuse the story got me sucked in. The games these days...the storyies are just weak. I mean really!!! Whats the last single player game had a great story?

dam jonny ur hardcore. All the resident evils..... I have love/hate the RE series. If i start playing one I have to beat it. And i won't quit till i do. Won't eat sleep do anythign but play till i beat.

Yup RE2 was the shit. One of the only games i have finished but that was back when i was in high school so I had a lot of free time.

I play a lot of games pretty close to the end, but if I get stuck and don't go back to it for a while, I'll just enable god mode simply for the sake of finishing it...

I did that with Unreal 2, for example...

I agree i havent completed a game in a long time....i think its getting burned out on it....ill play and play and play, then ill wanna take a break...all of a sudden another game comes out and i do the same thing....its a cycle hehehe. Sometimes ill get to an area of the game thats hard and ill just quit saying ill come back to it after i had some time away, but then when i go back, i think shit, i gotta go through this crap again...man i dun wanna do that so forget it....

I still finish the majority of games I get, assuming they have an end. Sometimes I feel like I'm grinding through it, sometimes I'm really enjoying it. Usually I try to take the bad parts hoping there will be a good part to redeem it afterwards. It is getting harder to want to finish all games though. I miss the days of NES when finishing Super Mario Bros. for the first time made me the most excited I had been in my life to that point... lol (I was still very young at this point :p)

I have the problem with WoW, I keep on making Alts (all under lvl 10) I've decidied to stick with my warrior, hes lvl 27, and I average about 1 lvl a day

Yeah I have a bad habit of doing this as well. I have beaten a few recent games though; DOOM3, HL2, and Halo for PC. BUT I have more games which I have not finished... too long to list.

I relate it to instant gratification, just as someone mentioned. Also, I have found it is diffficult to beat game if I put it down for a week... It's hard to get back into it for some reason.

Anyway, I recently decided to only buy multiplayer games which I do play a lot of... I did however buy GTA:SA... I've been enjoying it though and I plan on seeing it through to the end unlike the other GTA games! No really, I WILL FINISH IT! Even if I end up buying BF2 tomorrow... :p

Maybe you all should get checked for A.D.D. or something. I don't seem to have any trouble finishing a game. But maybe that's because I've been playing WoW for the past 6 months and haven't really played anything else. No, I beat RE 4. Oh look! Shiny! Did you say something?

I have a friend who probably hasn't ever finished a game. In his case I chalk it up to both short attention span and too much disposable income. Every time a new game comes out, he runs and buys it. He has all three current consoles, PSP, DS, and bought a computer a few months ago. He never finishes because he HAS to buy a game as soon as it's released. Being that instant gratification is his middle name, he must "try out" the new game and never goes back to the previous game. Wash, rinse, repeat...

I myself finish just about every game I get, and ususally will play them thru twice. The only games I haven't finished are those that truly suck, and I don't buy many of those, since I also rarely buy anything within a month of release. I would rather wait until I have read what you guys have to say about them, than spend $50 and be the one of the first to realize that a game sucks or is too buggy to play.
That and the fact that since I have a family to support and a wife in college, I don't have the money to go out and buy games all the time, so I make sure I get all I can from the ones I do buy.

We did have a ADD thread about four months ago (?) that covered this exact topic. In it we provided steps for forcing yourself to complete a game. Highly recommend the topic.

I finish every game I buy, even the ones that suck. I forced myself to finish Doom 3. 20 hours of ass-tastic gameplay. But if I pay $60 for a game, I'm going to see the ending damn it.

That's basically what it's about for me. I paid for it, I'll finish it.

I don't play many games, but those that I do start, and like, I will finish. I find myself playing mostly SNES RPGs, though. Lufia I/II, Chrono Trigger, FF, Breath of Fire, etc.

I think that it's mostly a matter of atmosphere: older games didn't provide much in terms of realistic graphics, so one would have to use one's imagination far more to 'fill in the blanks'. Whereas games like Doom 3 and HL2 pride themselves on having the most realistic graphics possible, and end up lacking in the 'story'-department. Kind of like virtually every single Hollywood movie released in the last decade or so. Special effects and CGI do not equal a good story.

One could say that there are two 'good' kinds of games: ones which allow for mindless play (CS, UT, etc.) and ones which attempt to tell a (interactive) story. Any attempt to combine those (Doom 3) is doomed to fail as a good game.

lol. Well i don't pay for games most the time.

games on my to do list

metal gear 3
Command and conquor generals.
Doom3 add on
Hitman 2

Mmmm. think thats about it. Oh and like metriod prime. but i dont' have gamecube...cuse its gay

I agree with this one. Even playing through the GTA series, I couldn't finish San Andreas just because it got pretty boring. (Vice City was the best IMO) I just bought an XBOX with Ninja Gaiden and I haven't played it much because it's just not fun enough to suck you in till the last drop!!!! Oh well, maybe I'll come back to it later this year lol.

good post ell. But see thats why i think unreal is the most prefect game ever. unreal had a single player and multiplayer. Neither where that great but the time they where the best. I love unreal single player cuse there was no story. Just ur in some far off world fighting weird creatures that live there. Not space mutants that wanna kill you (quake2) I like mindless killing. I hated unreal 2 for many reasons. Biggest one being the lack of the FUCING SHOCKCOMBO U tards......./endrant But they tried to add some story....But i guess some people liked it.......

Ya i love me a good old snes rpg. Cuse ur right u had to use ur imaignation cuse the graphics where blah. We could all play ff1 but it would look different in all of our heads lol. The game I have to get and beat is ff7. I can't call myself a geek unless i beat it. It seems like everyone beat it and says its the best. I'm a ff3 person myself

Does any1 like building their gaming computer and hanging out here more than actually playing the games? Sometimes I feel thats what has happend to me. Any1 else?

I want to go further here and say that MMO's are the internets version of reality tv shows

And even though I play EQ2 (pot - kettle...."hello"), I cant stand reality tv shows, dont watch a single one, but there are about 50 of them on tv, just like MMO's coming out. I guess its just easier for game devs to make an engine and put people in it and have them and let them do what they do since MMO's are the flavor of the month than to make an engine AND put an awesome story along with it.

Sucks, I miss single player games

Yeah, Im contemplating once I sell my laptop to not even build a new one

pffft games i feel just keep degrading in quality since the mid 90's... i mean cmon guys, almost everything was out in the mid-late 90's and after that... its just.... copy copy copy copy, new storyline, new textures better graphics, but thats about it...

I think gaming will come back stronger than ever when we all have VIRTUAL reality setups on out computers... so you really are IN the game, thats what ill invest in probably 10 years :) or less hopefully

I said that in the 90's about the 80's. Different year, same tune. There are great games out there, you just need to look for them. For example, I haven't seen a game like Katamari Damacy ever. Great game, great design and lots of fun. There are similar games out there, but usually made by smaller developers and publishers. You just need to look.

I was not expecting this kind of responce. lol.

For one reply... about warcraft, just some insider information, I made alt, after alt, after alt, then one day I said this is stupid, im going to keep a chr. and play it, even if later I hate the class or style of hair or whatever lmao. I did, got to 60, had some fun along the way (this was winter btw) when I got to 60 I found out I have to start doing 2-3 hour end game runs for a small % chance a drop of what I need will actualy drop AND on top of that PVP at least 10 hours a week to keep my PVP title. Uhm... NO. I deleted my acc and chr.

If you have the time and are into that by all means continue... lol. I just completed my job and was winter, my excuse. lol. MMOG are the devil.

Btw... the other poster who suggested old games were better? I agree, in some ways. I think it's because they were not as in depth, you could just sit down and enjoy something new, it's our age, we have been there, done that, maybe?

I just bought Destroy All Humans, im going to go see if I can make a go at it..... lol. ;) Went for a copy of BF2 but they said tomorrow. Doh.

Hey, I'm not that old! :D

I've read literally hundreds of books, mostly fantasy, even write my own books (well, trying to) and I refuse to play games which do not fall in one of those two previously described 'good games' categories.

What I like about an RPG like Lufia, FF, etc. is that you really have the feeling that you're exploring a vast world, even though the NPCs don't talk much and everything is basically pre-determined (you just have to stay alive long enough to reach the end :p ). Like I said, it's the atmosphere, much like when you're reading a good book.

The only relatively new games I can say I really like are Nintendo games, such as Mario 64 and Legend of Zelda (OoT, MoM). For mindless killing I kind of like UT and Q3, though fortunately I'm not a very violent person ^_-

I like the comparison of MMOs and reality shows on TV.

I finish 95% of all my games. I am fanatic about finishing games. Sure there are couple games that I didn't finish but they were just awfull or to hard (since I don't cheat thats a problem). THe only one game I have wanted to finish was Torment Planescape.

I think as the games get more complicated I'm becomming less interested. A great game is a easy pickup, good story, and smooth controls. The earlier games were better because they weren't as complex. I think Rampart is still the best multiplayer game of all time. There was a lot of strategy, but it wasn't complex to learn.

For all you guys saying FPS aren't fun..

I LOVED Far Cry...I really think it's the best game I've ever played. It beat HL2 hands down, and I even enjoyed it better than the original HL.

lol QFT

I remember back in the day when every game I owned, I knew front to back.

Maybe that's because back in the day, I owned like 12 snes games and a few computer games, and that was it. Now I have thousands of games that I'll never play.

I have many games that I haven't finished. I hate to admit this, but I bought HL2 the day that it came out. I made it to the trainyard... and then stopped playing. I was about halfway through farcry and doom 3. I wanted to finish those two before I invested in HL2. I finished doom 3, like a month ago. I'm still at the same spot in farcry.

I think, as an adult, with bigger things happening in my life, it's hard to stay interested. My attention span is not so great these days.

Seems like every post I have, I've mentioned RE4... that game I played front to back a few weeks ago. It was one of the best gaming experiences. As soon as you finish it, you want to do it again.

So, I guess it really depends on the game.

When i get new games i go through the cycle that most everyone does and play, play, play until i get burnt out. Then i go "take a break" and watch tv for many mounths then get a new game.

Either your insanly rich or warez'd all that.. I mean, I probably have a few dozen games at the most, if I had 1000 i'd be broke lol
