My theory is that it's Moore's Arm Law.
Huge market with lots of money to be made. Essentially, everyone gets a free upgrade every 2 years. This is HUGE to companies because it's almost guaranteed money, therefore, they will spend R&D budgets to try to be the better product to get more of that "sure" money.
