Last night I was watching Netflix in my M1 MacBook Pro 16 it suddenly turned off, and didn’t turn on, I tried to reset, pressed power button for 10 seconds tried hard reset by using tricks mentioned in internet. Nothing help. So I first visited Apple certified repair centre they said they will charge $150 for assessment which is non refundable. So I told them to fuck themself and visited another Apple repair centre they said that something happened to the motherboard and they will charge $200 for repair. Their are 80% chances for it to repair if it doesn’t work then they will get a new motherboard for which they haven’t told me the cost but I will have to wait for 15 days. Why are Apple MacBooks so unreliable? If you check my earlier threads my first MacBook had speakers issue that keep on replicating after replacing the speakers twice and their were dead pixels. This is my second MacBook it’s warranty was over on December 2023 and I came across this issue.

what type of surface was it on? nice soft insulating blanket in bed, or on a hard flat surface where it can breath properly? could try disconnecting the battery for a bit.

Hard surface a table. I already took it to the service centre they took $240 and said that the section of motherboard responsible for power was damaged, which they took 3 hours to repair

Mine are reliable, among them the same 16" Pro M1 Pro. But I also have Applecare for those that are still worth it.

I will always give credit to apple when it comes to quality and performance. But after these 2 incidents I will always question the reliability. Talking about apple care I am not sure this type of issue will be covered under apple care

Replacing the power section on the motherboard? Definitely covered.

Same here. My M1 Pro 16” is extremely reliable so far. I’m not saying products don’t occasionally have issues, but I have a 10+ year old MacBook that still gets used sometimes without any issues.

In fact they’d just swap the board. They generally don’t do any major in house repairs. They diagnose and replace and ship the parts back to be worked on.

Yeah, so you better have it backed up so you can do a restore when you get it back because you're getting a fresh out of the box experience with the latest MacOS when you get it back from Apple.

That was my experience. But I’d hope everyone has a backup since Time Machine is so well integrated at this point.

They're on-par with Lenovo in terms of reliability. So better than HP or Dell but not bulletproof.

You drew a bad hand, is all.

I always take extra care of all my apple gadgets including the MacBook. I hardly leave my MacBook on standby or sleep mode, I clean it regularly. I am apple products for decades. With iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and AirPods Pro, I never faced issues. Those products are top notch in terms of quality, reliability and performance, lasted for decades. Though I change iPhones every 2 years. I handle my gadgets with extra care. I only had bad experience with MacBook.

That repair also fixed vibration issue I was facing while charging my MacBook, ever since it arrived. So it looks like the power circuit issue was somehow connected with it.

I feel like we need laws that companies need to provide a MINIMUM of 3 year warranty on all products sold. This 1 year BS, then gouging for additional coverage is ridiculous. All while these companies go on about how great their products are....but they only trust them to work for 1 year...

Yes specially in case of apple, whose products cost 2x

I still have a Titanium MacBook from early 2000 that still works. It's battery doesn't work, though, so it only works plugged in.

Unreliable? I generally hate Apply products but one thing I cane give them credit for is that they make the most solid laptops out there.

Your bad experience != Macs are unreliable. Things happen with all electronics.

This is my second MacBook, I had bad experience with my first MacBook Pro too. After the warranty, its speakers started cracking, I replaced those speakers thrice and after a couple of months the same problem kept on repeating so I gave up and later started experiencing dead pixel issue.

My friend who is an iOS developer (Objective C) bought MacBook Pro in 2016-17 that had that touch bar. His MacBook bricked, he had to pay a premium of $800 to change his motherboard and bring it back to life, and less than an year after that repair his screen had issue for which he again paid a heavy premium.

Though I agree in terms of quality, and performance, apple and support (within the warranty period) laptops are best, I will never go to Windows Laptop after having MacBook

I've had many Macs over the years and I've only had issues with one that was out of warranty and Apple repaired for free because I never used the extended warranty I had paid for. All computers are prone to having problems. Your unfortunate luck with Apple products doesn't mean Apple products are bad. My cousin also has bad luck. She went through 6 iPhone 15s before she got one that worked. All of my iPhones, including my 15 PM, have never had any issues and I've been using iPhones since the 4S.

My 2011 MacBook Pro is still running fine with Linux Mint Cinnamon running on it. I just upgraded the RAM and SSD to make it functional.

My 2019 16" is on its third keyboard, all under Applecare. That also means a battery refresh every time, so it is a win for me.
