WHS slowdown with named address vs. ip address

Performance degradation came recently where the initial opening of a folder would take ~5 seconds to load when I open it via \\WHSname. This however disappears when I type in the IP of my WHS, e.g. \\111.000.222.333.

Any ideas on how I can fix this? I don't mind renaming everything to the IP, but I'd much prefer to have the name of the WHS displayed.

What is doing local DNS on your network?

er... I guess it would be NetBIOS.. nevermind...

add WHSname ip to the top of the hosts file.
Some AV programs install a huge host file list and that can cause this kind of problem as can a slow dns server.
dns has to time out or report no record before it tries other methods leading to the delay
.
