While the title for Episode VIII was only revealed yesterday, it feels like old news already, since everyone and their mom had something to say about it. Still, I want to hear what theories you guys have concerning the title. In my eyes, Disney are sociopaths who have no regard for the series’ lore and are only invested toward cementing new blood so they can push out more movies and toys, so I actually believe “Jedi” in the title could be singular, with the last surviving member being Mary Sue Skywalker. Whether Luke dies or not is anyone’s guess, but if it does actually happen, I can pretty much guarantee it is going to be cringeworthy if the writing is anything like The Force Awakens.

One possibility, already speculated about by fans online, is that the title does refer to Luke, with Rey being the first in a new line of something other than Jedi or Sith; a Force user that goes beyond the old structure and actually brings the much-promised "balance to the Force." If that's the case, then the title takes on a different meaning — something that seems far less doom-laden, and more optimistic; a passing of the lightsaber, if not the torch. What is worth considering, however, is this: Jedi isn't just a singular term. It's plural, as the franchise has made clear on numerous occasions. With that in mind, The Last Jedi not only doesn't have to choose between Luke and Rey, it can encompass both of them and more. Whatever happened to the Force users that Luke was training before his disappearance? Are they Jedi now as well, and if so, could the title be talking about them? (Could the title refer to whatever happened to make Luke go AWOL in the first place, for that matter?)

If you go with the typical method of "oh, lets fight" to "oh, shit we are getting our ass kicked" to "look, we can overcome and be awesome"...this sorta follows the method of the past two trilogies.

or any story series for that matter, it is a pretty standard format for telling a multipart story.

Why is it that for the last twenty plus years every protagonist has to be John Rambo Da Vinci?

There's not a lot of depth to a character that can do everything in the most awesome way imaginable. All while filled with brilliance and love for his fellow man.

Lucas, not Disney, is the one that put the Jedi/Sith at extinction level starting with Order 66.

Hasn’t it been confirmed for some time that Luke is in Episode 9? I remember reading this some time ago somewhere I thought.

"The Last Jedi" is just the latest example of JJ Abrams laying waste to everything he touches. (n)

There is no speculation. Being a Jedi is about more than simply being able to manipulate the Force. Luke is the only Jedi that is still alive, while Rey has a long way to go to be worthy of that title and Kylo Ren killed all of Luke's students in the visions we see.

They can always write in another last 'Jedi' character that has been hiding in some far away planet tending to a 3 headed cow creature farm.

Something about a sucker and his money.....

It has been mentioned that Jedi is both singular and plural, so technically Luke and Rey can both be living Jedi and have the title be true.

Star Wars plots are soon to be as relevant as Call of Duty plots......"Watch as renegade Jedi Poon Queefto and his band of rebels launch anti-establishment missions from Streisand Station.." Don't laugh, you know it's coming.

He didn't direct Star Trek Beyond, either. His involvement is enough to ruin it.

I believe you're looking for Chin Poon Queefto. Well all I can say is that I'll stick to the 'canon' films. I'm not going to go watch the early diaries of Han Solo or anymore Rouge One films. They may be excellent films on their own, but I don't care enough. I just hope Luke does some serious shit in this movie. It's been far too long that I've seen him, and he needs to show us something awesome. If they Jeff Bridges him like Tron Legacy then I'll pretty much be finished with DisneyWars. If all he does is walk around in some cleric cloak dispensing 'wisdom' nuggets, it's over.

It's the last of The Jedi as an order. Much like the Empire is no longer the Empire but "The First Order".. The Jedi Order - as the set opposition to the Dark Side and Sith - will end and the 'Gray Order' will rise up to counter The First Order/Fourth Reich group.

Kind of matters as to whether "Jedi" in that title is singular or plural.

You can say "The Jedi were here" or "A Jedi was here" and both make sense.

They could call it "Shit of the Jedi" and it'll still make more money than I'll see in 10 lifetimes. ;)

Also, Lucas not Disney Canonized Darth Bane as the creator of the Sith rule of two in the Clone Wars TV show's last season before Disney buyout.

Didn't like TFA that much (worth my money for the movie? yes, but not really worth rewatching).
Rogue One, though, was a step and a quarter in the right direction.
Looking forward to more films that explore the Star Wars universe's background, instead of the "Jedi Family Feud" that it's been for quite some time.

    Fuck your story line.

Without Star Wars how will I get gratuitous space battles?? It's right there in the name!

Sure, if you want sci-fi action lens flare Trek (with a bit of the latest hollywood moral preening). The third one is the best of the bunch I suppose. But all of them are rental pop corn flicks.

Anyway, the last Jedi is Jar Jar Binks. He will rise from the ashes like the phoenix and slay all Sith in his wake. Search your feelings. You know it to be true.

I won't say that they are bad, but I will say they are not following the traditional dychotomy of Star Wars and Star Trek. Star Wars was always about the tour de force special effects. Death Star trench scenes, Hoth AT-AT's, planets getting blown up by other planets. It's great stuff. Its the fantasies of Sci-Fi coming to life.

But Star Trek always offered a more intellectual story. The movies traditionally focused more on the topic and not the effects leading up to the topic. The current Star Trek movies are just action flicks. We have lots of action flicks. And we have lots of "artsy" space movies that are too full of themselves. Star Trek was always right in the middle. A little bit of action, but a little bit of mental engagement.

The mistake is believing that Star wars was once deep. It wasn't. The first 2.5 movies were fun (2nd half a Jedi is a slog).

    Much ado about nothing.

The title could mean any one of a dozen things at this point. At least wait for the trailers before howling about how Disney has destroyed your childhood.

remember when Force ghost Obi-Wan called Luke “our last hope” and Yoda said “No. There is another”?...in Return of the Jedi, it is revealed that Leia is Luke’s twin sister, so the conversation retroactively appears to be about her...but we now know that Leia went on to become a military general — not a Jedi...what if “there is another” was a prescient statement that actually refers to Rey?..and Yoda knew all along that she would be the one to carry on his legacy: the real last Jedi?

I for one Love the Force Awakens and love what is Happening with Star Wars.. I am glad to see people like JJ getting a chance to continue the story. I watched the original at the drive in back in 77 at the age of 6 I met my Wife at a Star Wars fan club and 2 of our 3 daughters are named after Star Wars Heroes from the Books (Mara and Teneniel). The Last Jedi is Luke's Story as he was referred to as the last Jedi in the Force awakens. I guess it will be the story of him passing on his mantel. I have to shake my head at all the Millennials who think it is their right to tell us what Star wars needs to be or jumping on the bandwagon of click bait slander just to piss real fans off. If you don't like it dont watch it. I will see it at 12AM opening day like I have with all SW movies from Return of the Jedi at the age of 12.

Not sure how capable Luke would be as a teacher. The little training he had was with a Yoda who was batshit crazy from living alone and old age senility.

Luke could be riding Rey like a donkey while hitting her with his cane as part of her training.

If that's the type of training he put his students through, no wonder Kylo embraced the Dark side.

They didn't Marry Sue her sufficiently for you? At the current rate, Rey will be able to force crush the universes' entire male population and prove once and for all that she's the pinnacle of nonsensical feminist movie power.

And then off-set Daisy Ridley will turn around and ask 65 year old Mark Hammil to open her diet coke for her because the lid is on too tight.

I can't be the only one that'd be a lot more interested in a Star Wars focused more on redeeming Kylo can I?

I think they really messed up the ending of TFA, they should have:

Made it clear in the fight at the end when Kylo was taking on Rey/Finn that he wasn't trying to win the fight, but rather was trying to get them to actually kill him because what he had just done to Han had literally broken him as he thought about it after the fact, like he gave in the dark side in that one split second and then regretted it to the point that he lost his marbles. Then at the end when the planet starts to break have Rey get onboard and then tell them to lower her down to pick up Kylo and bring him on board.

Then the next movie have it be about both Kylo and what he's going through, which would have been great to have him and Leia interact with what he had done and her struggle to try an dhelp her kid while still realizing what he did to the only man she loved as well as be about Rey and her search for Luke/training.

That's a good pitch but SW it seems is not about stories anymore. There's just too much shit writing wrapped up in mary sue's dues ex machina these days.

That batshit crazy training is the hallmark of what eastern metaphysics looks like for a westerner. It's the foundation for every great martial arts movie. Hello, karate kid! lol

I just hope they don't have him take his mask off anymore, as that dude's face hit every branch falling out of the ugly tree.

No facial symmetry, dumbo ears, mega-schnaz, soft jawline, pencil neck, etc... I mean, how are we supposed to believe that Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher could produce a baby that fubar? Like, did their positive hotness polarity somehow cancel out?

Call me old fashioned, but I miss the days when they thought "hey, if the audience is going to be looking at these guys for hours on end, why not have them be easy on the eyes?" I would have preferred Jake Gylleneneaahaalalal or however he spells it for the role.
