I'm setting up a pentium 166 MHz box with FreeBSD to act as a home router. I'm wondering which network cards have the onboard processors? I would like to install network cards that have onboard processors to reduce CPU load.

Thanks in advance for any help

intel and 3com NIC's should work for you. Usually anything over $30, and not the bargain d-link/netgear/linsys/Realtek cards.

I buy my intel nic's from newegg for around $30 i think.

intel pro 100 management adapter is awsome

not that it manages anything, its just named that

go to www.computergeeks.com and get 3com for like $10 if I remember.... may be misquoting. they are used/refurb tho

just remember dlink uses tulip chips. tulip was a breakoff from either 3com or intel or digital, one of the three cant remember. the chips are quite good but dont have the features of the big names. they are very reliable but just dont have the big name features. best for desktop systems ;)

I really like the 3com nics myself, seem to have the best luck with them.... intels are also pretty good. just stay away from the super cheap ones.
