Which Hard drive to run OS on

Go for the Hitachi as sheer performance isn't really needed for a HTPC.

I'm seeing the Hitachi at $65 and the Samsung at $50 AC.

I would go for the cheapest $/GB

Out of both options, the Hitachi has the cheapest price per gigabyte even with the promo code factored in:

Hitachi 7K3000 => $64.99 / 1.5TB = $0.04332
Samsung HD103SJ (no code) => $54.99 / 1TB = $0.05499
Samsung HD103SJ (with code) => $49.99 / 1TB = $0.04999

Hitachi seems like the clear winner here, bigger, larger cache, not much more money, etc.

If you want an even lower price-per-gigabyte hard drive, consider this:

$70 - Samsung EcoGreen F4 HD204UI 2TB 5900RPM HDD (with $10 off promo code EMCKCKC28, expires 7/13)

Samsung HD204UI (no code) => $79.99 / 2TB = $0.039995
Samsung HD204UI (with code) => $69.99 / 2TB = $0.034995

The HD204UI isn't faster than the HD103SJ or the Hitachi, but speed isn't necessary for an HTPC.

I don't know why CleanSlate feels so strongly against them.

Granted, you shouldn't use "green" drives as primary drives for, say, gaming because they run at slower speeds (between 5400RPM and 5900RPM) and often have less cache than their 7200RPM siblings. However, since you're using them for an HTPC, their slower speeds aren't deal breakers.

If streaming, downloading, and playing media aren't the primary focus of this machine, or you plan on playing some games, then you should consider the aforementioned 7200RPM drives instead.
