I have an older system (parts thrown together) for a relative. Running XP, P4 3.0 wanting it to be able to play some older games (UT 2004, Doom 3, etc). Wanting to upgrade from a Geforce 4 4200 to something better. What AGP card can u recommend, was thinking of something like an aTi 9800 or better. At what point will a better card not make much difference?

I think I remember the x850 being marketed for playing doom 3 awesomely. I personally had an x850xt pe in my rig back then, I would recommend that or the nvidia 6800 ultra was the equivalent at the time

Id probably go with a 6800 ultra or gt....these were kick ass agp cards in their day. I remember tweaking every little bit out of my GT to get Doom3 to render all its graphics glory....There are faster cards, but if $$ is a factor, you can pull one off of E-bay for Less then $20 shipped.

If you can find it, the 3850 ati agp was the best agp made after that it's probably the 46xx agp card ati made

Anything AGP card that is dx9 SM3.0. (skip the x850pro, 9800pro, or fx5900)
Many games like BioShock, Vegas, newer indie games, etc will run fine on a single core P4 cpu, but required SM3.0 video card.

ATI x1650/x1950pro/xt, 2600/2900pro/xt, HD3650/3850, HD4650/4670
Nvidia 6600GT, 6800, 7800GS.

7800GS AGP cards go for $40-$45 on ebay.

The HD4670 AGP is significantly faster, but usually goes for around $75+ on ebay, unless you're lucky enough to catch a $50-$55 one

For either one it's probably a good idea to check for motherboard compatibility, especially if you have some oddball chipset with flaky AGP 2x/4x support. It should be ok if the board supports 4x (only) or 4x/8x.

My AGP card is a TNT 2 Ultra (plus V2 12MB SLI) in a retro gaming system. :)

p4? i hate p4... if i was living in us, i would send you a new mobo+cpu+ram combination to deter you from using that.

did you see the games listed? "UT 2004, Doom 3"
the three cards you listed to skip would be fine for the games listed

Yeah just go with atleast a 6600GT and on up.. I played UT2004 doom3 and quake4 on a 6600GT. But then later upgraded to a 7800GT but that one was PCIe.. The other guys got you on the right track.

7800gs played those games flawlessly at 1680x1050

$50 on line.

had a microstutter issue with black and white 2 though.

+1 for the 7800 GS recommendation. Also, the HD-4670 AGP is still on sale if you're willing to pay for such a card. I know, I know - it's overkill for the CPU, but still. :D

I bought this 4670 when my 1950pro died on me.

Stupid expensive as far as "price per performance" goes compared to modern cards but those modern cards are PCIe-x16 and not AGP. The 4670 is faster than the 1950 pro, but not my much. 1024 vs 512 MB ram and less power usage and noise makes the 4670 better than the 1950 pro.
