hello!

which 240-256 GB SSD should I buy?

how can I make sure it will be compatible with my system?

thanks!

I would suggest a Samsung 830, an Intel 520 or a Crucial M4. What system do you have? If you have at least a SATA controller (preferably at least SATA2, though even SATA1 will see a performance increase), you should be fine.

Man, you just missed out - the Crucial M4 256GB was available for $159 yesterday at Amazon and Newegg, but now it's back up to $199. I'd go with the Samsung 830 right now, although the new Neutron is also hanging around at $199 if you feel like taking a chance on a newer drive (the Neutron GTX is more expensive, and probably not worth the extra money).

You will have no problem, though you will be limited to SATA 3Gb/s speeds even if you buy a SATA 6Gb/s drive because of the older controller that board is based on.

Unless you're doing file copies, you won't much notice the difference between SATA II and SATA III. The biggest difference between SSDs and HDD are that SSDs give way better IOPS (thouands of IOPS versus 100 or so) and lower latency. Both of which are mostly unaffected by the difference in bandwidth.

I wanted a samsung 830 but the Crucial M4 was $50 less when I was ready to buy

so I have a 256GB M4 ...it has been flawless so far and the speed (coming from Hitachi 1TB (now storage drive) is pretty epic.

from what i've seen w/ the M4 and read on the 830 either will make a fine choice.

So how much difference is there between SSDs, aside from the size and manufacturer of of the controller? After all, there are no moving parts in an SSD.;)

Controller and firmware are extremely important. They're responsible for wear leveling and reducing write amplification. Drives that use the same controller are usually very similar but there can be big differences between drives that use different controllers.

Also, some manufacturers are less reliable/trustworthy (cough, OCZ) than others (pretty much everyone else)

I have 2 Adata Premier Pro SP900 256GB, work fabulously.

sata 3, 85-90k iops, etc etc
