Where are the Ivy Bridge Ultrabooks?

So far it looks like Apple is the only name in the game with the new Air. What gives? I've seen tons of announcements but nothing actually for sale yet.

Ok, so far it looks like the Samsung Series 9 and the Sony Vaio T are also out there. The only problem is that the Series 9 is as expensive as an Air and the Vaio T has a crappy screen.

Everything I've read says the majority of companies will release their IB ultrabooks by July 1. That Samsung Series 9 does look very sexy though.

The Thinkpad x230 isn't quite an ultrabook (it's a bit thick apparently), but it has the new specs and comes in a small & efficient package. Personally I prefer it to the stupidly thin options everyone else seems to be making.

Unfortunately, I need a thin 13" computer that will fit in my camera bag. If nothing else good comes out it looks like I'll just be running Windows on an Air.

the ASUS Zenbook Prime is looking pretty legit to me. 1080p IPS on a 13.3. Pretty sure that's the one I want.

I was shopping around for ultrabooks about a month ago, bought a Series 9 but returned it and got a MBA... somehow the Series 9 did not feel as premium. Also the fact that the Series 9 costs more than a MBA (not including the student discount I got a friend to get ;)) The screen on the Series 9 was absolutely fantastic though, matte and excellent viewing angles. The Asus and Acer ultrabooks just felt very cheap and plasticky to me, although the new Zenbook does have good specs.

If you can find a student then I would say just get the MBA, I just don't think the Windows ultrabooks are there yet. Also consider the resale value, it is significantly easier to find buyers for Apple products.

I can get the Student/Faculty discount since my dad works for a university, but it's only $50 off, not that great a deal. I actually get more money off using 5% off the Apple store through my Discover card.

I wonder if I'll be able to get hands on with any of the ultrabooks at BB or some other retailer, I really would like to touch one before buying it. What sold me on the Air initially was the beautiful build quality. My buddy has one and it feels really nice in your hands.

Interesting, VIZIO laptop. And those are good specs for $899, jeez.

You need to really factor in two things though.

1) Realize that VIZIO more than likely, did not design an ultrabook. They more than likely hired a 3rd party who does that. Furthermore, their support will reflect that.

2) Realize that VIZIO is a "low cost" company. Therefore while they are willing to make slimmer margins and adjust via volume...there will still be a slight quality hit.

The question is..is a $100-$200 worth it? That is a fair argument and could be made.

I have looked at UltraBooks that are coming up, and have a problem - NO WIRED NETWORK!!
There is no way I am going to shell out $1000 (+ insurance) and have to carry around a dongle.
AMD seems to have ultrabook equivalents coming (see HP) that, although a tad thicker, fit my usage much better - the slower CPU power does not affect me.

Maybe you should demand a floppy drive in all the ultrabooks too.

But in all seriousness I don't think many people will miss ethernet ports or DVD drives in ultrabooks because that's not their purpose. Ultrabooks are supposed to be as light and thin as possible, and an ethernet port is thicker than a lot of ultrabooks so it makes no sense to include them. People who want more ports/optical drives will buy a regular laptop instead.

With a good wireless N connection...wired isn't critical. The biggest thing you gain is better large file transfer time. For everything else...it feels about the same. And even if somebody was moving 100's of GB around, most will just walk away and wait for it to complete.

They have the UX32VD listed on amazon too and that is the one I am looking forward too. Only one variant listed though with a 1.7GHz i7.

So is it legit? Other models are listed as shipping in 8-9 days. It should be released about now, or 8-9 days at the latest.

I love how those are solid state, but Amazon lists them as a speed of "7200rpm"... lol. Cut and paste FTW!

Well, I think I'm going to take the plunge to figure out if they are shipping and or are real.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Still waiting for it to ship unfortunately :( It should be here at some point next week and I'll let you know. I've done a bit of reading into it and I'm looking to install the OS to the SSD and use the HDD as a slave drive.

I'll keep you posted though, I'm getting quite impatient.

What's wrong with the Vaio T screen?
