The golden age died when AMD couldn't keep up with the Core 2 CPU's. With no competition intel has sat on its lazy ass
Rubbish, mobility and datacenter have progressed amazingly. Even the desktop had lots of improvement since Core 2.
The real issue is software, just adding more cores isn't innovation.
ARM is without "competition" due to being a monopoly in its instruction set, and their next step is this:
