If you want some serious range, you need adapters with antennas.

I bought a couple from this site, along with a massive antenna from Amazon. I use it for my netbook in the car, and it picks up tons of signals. In a residential area (non-apartment - houses) I usually see at least a couple dozen.

Just thoroughly research whatever you are buying first to make sure there are no driver issues etc.

yeah i was wondering if i can use my linksys and buy a good antenna? blw which one did you buy.

I've used various stuff from this place
http://www.fab-corp.com/

Including the white outdoor fishing pole antennas, and extra long high gain rubber ducks. Going to use their directional (parabolic) ones soon at a car dealership to link some buildings.

Nope. Not unless you like soldering, and even then, you will get way further with a 1000mw Alfa 802.11b/g card than any Linksys card. Don't buy the 2000mw card or the 802.11n card. They are inferior in receive sensitivity.

This is the one you want.

I can connect at 1/4 mile with the included antenna on that card.

No, the Alfa is easily 10 times better than your linksys card. Receive sensitivity and transmit power on your Linksys is easily less than 1/10th that of the Alfa.

I would put the DD-WRT firmware on the router that you have and bump it a little. Using my WRT54G and the DD-WRT firmware with the stock antennas, I can connect at about 1/4 mile.
Installing the firmware does require a little advanced knowledge and patience, but there are alot of help threads on http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index in the forums section

Fish

More power just means you can transmit even farther than your adapter can receive. You need transmit and receive gain.

These come with RP adapters and would give you around 4 times the power in transmit and receive. I've used one of these for years testing links, they work great, can fit in a bag and they're inexpensive.

That antenna plus the 1000mw b/g Alfa card would be a great combination., all for under $100.

i need an antenna for recieving to install on my adapter.

Not even close to worth the hassle. Buy a whole new adapter. I got my Alfa for $36 free shipped with Amazon Prime.
Yours (and pretty much any) generic Linksys adapter sucks. Besides, you would have to solder an antenna jack if you wanted to use any these antennas. Just buy a card that already has an antenna jack. Chances are, you will buy the Alfa, and realize that is all you need, and not have to buy an extra antenna.

I'll second an Alfa, I have the 1000mw and it's great.

update ! i turned the usb adapter 90 degrees so the thin side is facing out im now getting even better results.

I'd be interested in seeing the results from a Folgers can mod :p

How can that 2000mw adapter be sold in the US? I'm pretty sure that 30db / 1W is the maximum broadcast strength allowed on a single channel.

Sams club has some huge cans of planters peanuts, for like 9 bucks. I want to say they're bigger than those, they're about maybe 8-10" in diameter.

just an update i bought an alfa 1000mw adapter there amazing, better then my can but not by that much. i get more ap but signal isnt better its the same . i also bought a hawking window antenna this also works great better then the antenna that come with the alfa usb adapter.
