whats the difference between clean install and upgrade.

seems like with the new windows 7 my school only sells upgrades. which is fine.
But if i upgrade what does it exactly do with my original partition of vista? does it get wiped out or does it just put an os over the original which in turns uses more disk space.
 
The upgrade transfers your files to the new os and whipes away vista. However, you must use the upgrade matrix to see if your version of vista can upgrade to the version of Win 7 you want to upgrade to.
 
What ever way you end up getting Win7 on your machine just make sure you back up your data before starting.

Someone in another thread said they were able to boot to an Upgrade disc and do a clean install w/o having anything else installed. He said he will update on success once it's completed.
