What's all this crap about mobile gaming is the future?

I keep seeing game developers claiming mobile gaming is the future of gaming. If that is true it is game over for me because I am in no way gaming on some dinky phone or iPad when I have a 28" LCD and a 50" Plasma to game on. Fuck you game developers, you are writing your own future wishes against our true wishes. The real reason they say that is because it is less work for more money. It's all about the money and nothing else.

The only thing I know is this.

Battlefield 13 on the Holodeck would be the shit!

That's cool. While you are over there complaining, I will be playing cool games on mobile platforms. I also have a big TV and a nice computer and a few consoles and I play fun games on all of those too. For me, it's way more entertaining to just play the best games and not worry so much about which platform or form factor they are available in. Whatever platforms talented developers are making great games on are the ones I will use.

I play Angry Birds and Tower Defense games while taking a nice comfortable shit; that's about all the mobile gaming I do.

For the hard of reading, they are saying the "future" of gaming and never said they are going to make great games for *all* platforms. I bet they would love to see the PC die as a gaming platform so they can make stupid kiddy games for iPhones. Anyone who thinks playing casual games on a fucking iPhone is great is no gamer.

Try playing a game like Skyrim or BF3 on an iPhone and get back to me.

Try playing a game like Osmos on your TV. I tried to play it on the PC and didn't care for it, but I've got hours in on it on my tablet. Zen Bound is amazing on mobile but would be stupid with a mouse and keyboard. Different games are better on different platforms. No reason to stand in the way of developers making good games just because you don't like the platform.

Have you actually read any articles from these knobs claiming Mobile is the future of gaming? Do you understand what they mean by that? They are saying they are going to focus on Mobile gaming because that is what they think is the future of gaming. They are not saying we are going to make great games for all platforms. They are FOS twats anyway talking out of their ass and know shit about what is the future of gaming. Bring on the holodecks already FFS!

Mobile gaming is the future of gaming. Graphics on iDevices and Android devices are getting quite good. With something like the AppleTV 2 or wireless HDMI, I don't see the need for consoles/PC games in the future. Still a few gens to go though.

Maybe you shouldn't listen to pundits or analysts so much. I suggest playing more video games instead.

It makes for good forum fodder. Look at the post above yours, they sold him their BS already.

Where do I plug in my joysticks, steering wheel/pedals and TrackIR? How about supporting SLI and Xfire video cards? Maybe one day a phone can do all that but not in my lifetime so they need to cut back on the drugs and focus on making good games for my PC instead of living in lalaland.

mobile gaming has been going on for at least the last 40 years....nothing new here

I think what they mean is 'where the future of money is at'. There are more mobile users than PC gamers and consoles added together.

I completely agree. Plus they offer more flexablity than traditional consoles.

Give it a few years, phones and tablets will take over the console market. I don't see the PC going anywhere though.

Who said anything about giving those up? The idea is you wireless stream HD to 28 and 50”+ screens like the Ipad2 airplay system. Look up the videos of 4 Ipad2’s steaming the same game in HD to the same large screen for 4 players. That’s the future.

As mobiles get more powerful the need for a console or PC starts to vanish and you just walk around with a mobile that does everything the PC/console used to do. You then use wired or wireless docking stations to keep the mouse/keyboard and full sized screen.

EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bxj1QuKebdQ fo an exmple

I don't mind mobile gaming as long as things like graphics, physics, audio, controls, etc don't take a step back or remain stagnant.

Plus until there is unified hardware I don't see this type of gaming taking off any time soon. Cellphone hardware differs so much that a lot of newer high-end games won't run on 90% if the phones out there (Android being the obvious platform discussed)!

So...am I OK with mobile being the future? Sure, as long as games continue to be incredible and graphics and controls don't degrade.

Ah, its just a bunch of nonsense that started before 3DS came out and silly "analysts", who dont have a clue, saying dedicated devices are dead.
3DS is now at 15-16 million sold. This nonsense should end soon, just ignore it.

A touch screen will NEVER be a substitute for tactile feedback (sticks/buttons).
50,000 checkers apps does not equate a gaming ecosystem. The argument is so flawed, its amazing so many are trumpeting that nonsense.

More like 100's of millions sold (look at Ipad or Iphone not the rubbish 3DS), With graphics like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fL7p2P6Ft3Y steamed wirelessly in HD to a HD TV. Dedicated devices are not dead yet but they are slowly being replaced by mobile devices. How is the argument so flawed? It makes perfect sence. The only nonsense is saying this will end soon. Mobiles are here to stay and will keeping takeing more and more market share.

it's hardly nonsense... they might have sold 16m 3DS's, but in contrast, 160m iOS devices have been sold not to mention how many Android and WP7 devices are in consumers hands around the world. With many mobile OS games being cross platform these days, not only is it better for the consumer but it's also better for the developers. Publishing their games/apps to iOS/Android/Windows markets is cheap compared to traditional consoles (handhelds or otherwise) and likewise, so is licensing.

Not only that, but hardware is being improved every year in the case of iOS and even more frequently with Android. That's something that traditional consoles also can't compete with.

As far as touch screen gaming being a replacment for tactile controls, it doesn't have to be (although, in some instances, touch controls ARE better). The platforms are in their infancy, but with hardware devices like icontrolpad, icade, gamebone, etc... you can get real tactile controls on a phone or tablet. As the platforms mature, you'll see better accessories for gaming released.

And if you believe that the only games that exist are checkers apps, then I don't blame you for having the opinion that you do. However, I encourage you to actually do some research and check out some of the more hardcore games coming out of iOS and Android. They're console quality titles and with some more refinement and some more advanced hardware, can gives dedicated gaming consoles a serious run for their money. Especially when you're done playing on your 60" TV, just unplug the HDMI cable and throw your phone back in your pocket.

It's not going to be overnight... but give it a few years. Hell, Nintendo's president has even been quoted saying that "iOS is our biggest threat". Mobile devices are only going to get better... they're not a fad that's going anywhere anytime soon.

Personally I have no interest in mobile gaming until the technology is absurdly powerful and the monitor goes on like very light glasses at no visual penalty from todays monitors or you jack in directly.

I think mobile gaming primarily caters to three kinds of "teenagers": The commuting kind, the smaller the better crowd who love using inadequate equipment in their homes or the ones who do not work hard enough at work or in school.

Mobile gaming is going to kill the console the day the GPU is there to deliver serious quality and when it hooks up effortlessly and lag-free to any modern TV.
Personally I am going to throw a party when this happens.

yea...it's all fun and games until someone hacks the holodeck and disengages the safety mechanism.

ROFL :D Moriarty and Barclay I think... pretty decent episode!

So many reasons that holo decks are problematic.

I hope you are wrong. While I agree that consoles are set to get transformed (miniaturized), I think PCs are going to remain a viable and profitable alternative to casual gaming devices for a long time. I am going to do what ever I can to keep it like that :D

Osmos and Zen Bound play just fine on PC. IIRC you only need a mouse for Zen Bound.

Hell, I remember when mobile gaming was a deck of cards.

Regardless of what consumers want or don't want, the producers will continue to follow what yields the most profits. As others have stated, mobile devices are in the hands of more people than consoles or PCs. Sales mentality have been the same since before any of us were born and I don't think it will change in the foreseeable future.

Maybe I'm too oldschool but I have a hell of a time playing games on touchpad's that use directional buttons like platformers. With that being said I'll stick to games like Chess and Bejeweled when I'm on the go.

I just hope the game makers don't all flock to the causal crowd. They outnumber us 10 to 1, therefore there's more money there, even if they sell games at $2-3 a pop.

I don't really care about casual gaming trends.

Games are just games. No one calls short stories "casual novels" or TV shows "casual movies." There's short games, long games, quick games, engrossing games, easy games, hard games and everything in between, but they are all still games.

I've been playing Spectral Souls on my tablet and it's anything but "casual." I have 20+ hours in on it and I'm not even half way through it. There's plenty of "epic" mobile games if that's what you are looking for.

There are definitely complex games in the mobile market. Though it is obviously not where the market is trending. Generally speaking, mobile gaming is dominated by quick play casual games. Yes, casual games are a real thing. Something quick to play, easy to understand, instantly rewarding.

hell no. Why do you assume mobile hardware will advance, but x86 CPUs and GPUs won't? A PC will always be more powerful than a phone, and will thus always have more advanced games (graphics, physics, input, gameplay etc). They're not being replaced, it's just people who wouldn't buy a computer or console in the first place are buying smarphones and tablets.

Mobile games are simple junk that mostly sell to people who don't play video games. If you gave them an xbox I bet most would say "no-no I don't play video games", and then go back to angry birds.

If I had a commute on a bus maybe I'd play some, but every game I've tried is simple, shallow and boring after 3 min. But as someone said the casual vs "[h]ardcore" market is at least 10:1 so that's where the money is at. But I'm confident there will always be someone willing to fill the niche of making "real" games. If EA go all mobile, I'm sure Paradox or indies will still make games with gameplay beyond flinging things or spelling

Its flawed, the same way your argument is flawed.
150 million cell phone users does not = 150 million GAME PLAYERS.

And thats the same reason theres 20 billion shit apps on istore and market. Have fun trying to pick out the diamonds in the rough, that play like shit anyway since your finger is in the way of everything.

You dumb lamers are no challenge to troll.

It's funny cause your trolling didn't phase me one bit. Called it from a mile away.. learn to create more controversial thread titles. To say you were the next Fail on the forum does him no justice. At least he knows how to make thread titles.
