Using the Western Digital hard drive types as reference
https://www.wdc.com/products/internal-storage.html
- Black Desktop Performance
- Blue Desktop
- Purple Surveillance
- Red NAS

Here's my use case
- Computer runs 24/7
- Steam games are installed and running from that hard drive
- Storage for MP3s and Movies and playing from it as well (no streaming)
- VMs are saved and running from that hard drive
- The size of the hard drive I plan to purchase is probably between 4TB to 6TB

I was considering Red NAS but due to the nature that it is not a 100% storage drive, I now leaning toward a Blue Desktop. Your thought?

If you're not concerned with VM performance, then I'd say get whichever has the best warranty, which is usually the NAS drives.

HGST is great. I recently purchased a Seagate Ironwolf for same type of use. Seems to be reliable so far on 24/7 for about a year. Can't say much longer than that, since i've only had it for a year.

I use a WD Black 4TB for my Steam games, photos, and general storage. Excellent drive, though the Blacks are rather pricey.
I paid $240 at the time for the one I have.

This WD 4TB Gold is cheaper than the Black at $174.59.

The Red Pro is the same price as well. Description says 64MB cache but the part number and pictures show the 128MB Cache version.
