What to do with refrigerated Artic Silver 5 laid sideways?

I read all over the net that artic silver 5 can go bad. How can I tell if it has gone bad? I kept my AS5 stored inside the refrigerator for 2-4 years, but it was laying on it's side. I have also read that I should remix the thermal compound. How would I go about doing that?

Much appreciated.

De-plunge the syringe (so it's "as open as possible") and stick a straightened paper clip inside... Repeat vigorously for a few minutes, being careful not to let any escape the syringe.

But, I've used AS5 that was in my garage for 2 years with no noticeable separation... The cheaper pastes, on the other hand, really benefit from the method I described above.
