Hi I'm looking for a new monitor at the moment as I have an GTX 580 displaying on a very old 19 inch vga only monitor.

My only problem is with a wide range of monitors I really don't know which one to get. I'm looking size wise at no more than 24 inch at a price range of about £250 or $380 roughly.

I hear that a 1920x1200 supporting monitor is much better for gaming but I really don't know. Can anyone suggest the best monitor I can get for this price range (I don't mind pushing it to £300 if there is a really great monitor for the extra £50.

Thanks.

I would suggest this monitor only because I've seen it personally, a friend along with his GF own this monitor and while, not a 24" monitor, my apologies, I know, I don't follow rules very well, it has such an outstanding and brilliant picture. It's a 27" LED, very thin and the price is excellent. What I liked about it was that unlike normal CFL based monitors, the LED really made the display pop and it just begged you to play a game, surf the web and just really enjoy the beauty of the display.

I've been using 32" and most recently a 42" display for my monitor but they have been non-LED based displays. This new Acer 27" LED monitor my friends have has made me decide to more than make sure my next monitor will be an LED based display.

This is in your price range, and should be on your short list for a gaming monitor:

It has good response time for an LCD (2ms), and it's 120hz. It's also matte, so there are no reflections. I was hoping to see more of a difference with 120hz over 60hz, but I think the response time is the thing that holds back LCDs in comparison to CRTs. Still, it's about the best you can do for LCD gaming at this point, as far as I can tell. There are a few other 120hz LCDs that you may want to check, some may be glossy.

One thing the 120hz should give you is more flexibility with vsync, and that can make a difference.

Take a look at the BenQ XL2420T, it's brand new. And it has some cool features that most monitors don't have. They have a scaling system which lets you adjust through the OSD to change the screen size from widescreen to 4:3. Also they have a new black equalizer system which allows you to brighten dimmed areas during gameplay without affecting much of the rest of the screen brightness, so it is a focused dark area brightness increase. Also they include this little mouse scroller on the base of the screen which allows you to instantly switch between 3 pre-set settings of OSD preference which instantly switches settings of the monitor for fast results. The monitor comes with 2 HDMI, 1 DVI, and 1 VGA input ports. Pretty sweet design as well.

I got to admit though, the BenQ 120hz monitors are pricey, and it really depends if you want to pay the extra amounts for the extra features. However, those that purchase it seem quite happy with it :)

Though if you want real-estate, the Asus sounds bang for buck. 27" for 250 pounds.. haha can't beat that.
