Audacity is a fantastic freeware program, tons of features, and all for a great price. Is there an equivalent piece of freeware video editing software?

Not with crippling restrictions like so many have, just a solid and full featured piece of work.

Like Audacity? Not really, not unless you pay for it. Then you can get such tools as Adobe's Premier, Sony's Vegas Pro, etc.

VirtualDub, of course. If you know what you're doing with it, you can pull off some fairly serious "magic." There's a fairly large community behind it, and it's been around for a very long time, with plugins of a wide variety to accomplish the tasks you may need done.

Been using it since it first appeared and I still use it for pretty much any video editing needs that arise. No, it won't do the kinds of things Premiere will when it comes to high-end "everything but the kitchen sink" kind of customization, but for raw video editing - actual editing purposes - it's astonishing what this roughly 1.5MB download can accomplish.

Virtualdub will give more control over the quality of the output than pretty much anything, but you have to take the time to learn to use it, it isn't designed to make the decisions for the user.
