What is going to be a realistic price for the R9-290x and R9-290?

With the $330 GTX970 now available, both the R9-290x and R9-290 look kinda stupid at their current prices. My question, is what is a reasonable price drop for these cards. I'll post how I think AMD should re-price their line up bellow.

R9-290x - $300
R9-290 - $250
R9-285x - $200
R9-285 - $170
R9-270x - $150
R9-270 - $130
R7-265 - $110

At least for me, that's how much those cards are worth with the GTX970 currently available.

Anyone else care to chime in?

I can't imagine anyone choosing a 290x over a 970 just to save $30. 290X should be $250 and then filter that price down from there.

290X at $300 wont sell when the GTX 970 can be had for $30 more. Also there is no 285X

Edit: I wonder how much it costs AMD to make a 290X and a 290. There has to be a point where they can't afford to sell them at such a loss.

Not sure. I have been thinking of getting a second used reference R9 290 next week off EBAY. I would like to pay around $200 for it. I think that $200 for a used reference R9 290 reference is perfect pricing. Not sure how that translates into new pricing though.

Sounds correct for me.. but as other said, no reason to pick a 290X just to save 30$ and still perform worse than a 970 specially if overclocking are involved as most of those card have a 1450mhz guarantee out of the box..

I just got a fantastic deal on a pair of 290 non X versions off craigslist for $300.

I will say, I can't run Tri-Fire. It gets way to hot under my desk.

Looking forward to 20nm CPU's and better performance

We in the EU don't have it so good.

The cheapest 970 here is around $450.

I paid $400 for a 290x a week ago and still think it was a bargain.

Wow dude sell me for $330 :p.

Because of low supply/high demand and VAT price of 970 is much higher in my country, but assuming the 330$ price tag, 290X shouldn't cost more than 270$ while 290 should be 250$.

There has to be a noticable difference in price between 290/970, because NV not only is faster and clocks better, but is also a lot more efficient, and overall considered as more "premium" than AMD cards...

The price should be lower than that 290x for 250 and 290 for 230 etc

AMD will probably lose money with each sell of those cards at those prices, specially under the long term as ADM@troy trolled us with the launch of the 285 in india...

AMD is already loosing money and will get a beat for coming 6 months. Its better they should price their product well. Well i quoted the prices of aftermarket.

thats hard as AIB will lose money with each card too.. nobody will produce a card to lose money.. they are probably making a very small profit with actual prices..

Also there is no 285X

Not available now, but it's incoming as a fully enabled Tonga chip. It'll perform well above the R9-280x and GTX770, closer to R9-290 performance. At $200 such a card could give AMD a chance at that price class and will help AMD tremendosly to stay relevant while nVidia conquers the mid-high/high end.

I agree, "no reason to pick a 290X just to save 30$".. however add in the Never Settle: Space Edition bundle and you are getting three games (up to about $50 each) included.. so in essence you are getting nearly equal perf at substantial savings with the games factored in..

Meh, why get stuck with inferior hardware that runs hotter/louder and doesnt perform as well or have as much OC headroom just for .. a few games. Games you could probably find on sale at GMG or ebay easily for much less than $50. Better to have superior hardware that will play your existing library better than the 290x. Otherwise you're no better than the dumb kids that buy an Xbone just because it comes with a free racing game.

That said, to answer OP's question I think 290x needs to come down to $250.
