What is holding the speed of video cards back, the AGP bus (8x) or the video card itself?

holding it back from doing what?

gotta be specific

We still haven't used the 8x AGP slot to its full potential...

not true, fact is it could be doing more things, the problem is the fact that 8x is as fast as we got, so they have to worry about working within that constraint

pci-e will alliviate a lot of constraint

considering that the performance difference between the same card in 8x and 4x mode is a few percent, I'm thinking there's plenty of bandwidth left in 8x...

yes, because they aren't utlilizing it all like they could be

for example, using the GPU for doing other tasks, like a processor, to handle AI and stuff in games, stuff like that won't happen until the link between the video card and computer is faster, like PCI-E offers

PCI Express will offer other improvements besides just bandwidth. Like you stated, the improvement of 8x over 4x AGP is non-existant. I have read that the way that the video card will interact with writing to memory will be one of the biggest advantages of PCI Express over AGP.

Someone here can elaborate on what I'm trying to say. I read this a while back and it was pretty techinical (another words over my head :D) and I can't find a link.
