What have I just gotten myself into! (cheap 2P system)

Well, the system has been up and folding 24/7 for the past few days and it's been getting around 27000 ppd! Basically it's just completing two 609[789] units a day for ~13500 points each. With the 80mm fans running full out on the 1U copper heatsinks it's pretty steady at 70C, so not too bad.
I just ordered a couple of these with the idea that it's going to get hot this summer:

Meanwhile the Hyper 212's are sitting on my shelf, since they are a little too big to fit in the case I've got the motherboard in...and I still haven't quite figured out how I'd mount them anyway. I may need to grind the feet of these new heatsinks a bit, but at least they'll fit in the case!
Considering that the best folding hardware before this was my Geforce 470 which only made is up to around 20k ppd when overclocked, and is about what my 9800GT, 250GTS and 460 756mb did all running together(!), I'm pretty happy!

Bumping this thread up because I'm looking to do the VID pin mod to my E5450's. I did the BSEL mod and running 1600 FSB for 3.6ghz, but they are not stable.
My stock VID's are 1.0875 and 1.2125 (weird range), I'd like to probably just run them both at 1.35 or 1.3625v because I'd like to try to even get 4ghz out of them.
But I need the chart that shows VID 1-6 and which pins I need to cover/jump for what voltages.

I just noticed this thread and didn't have time to go through the whole discussion yet. Anyone wants information on LGA 771 just let me know. I've been running these systems for at least 4 years and did just about anything you can imagine folding-wise. I probably have one of the most extensive background on this platform in the [H] team. Currently running 6 of these in various configs comprising both Clovertowns and Harpertowns including a Skulltrail.
To conclude briefly, I would not acquire any LGA 771 system unless it's extremely cheap or given for next to nothing. They are simply to weak nowadays for any serious folding. Despite having two processors and 8 'true' cores, they are at best 50-60% superior to a decently clocked LGA 775 quad-core, IOW, underwhelming. Any single processor system of the last couple of years including first iterations of LGA 1366 will be superior for less power consumption.
Having said that, I'm in the market for some 800MHz FB-DIMMs (preferably performance RAM made for OCing) to upgrade my Skulltrail system. I have no idea if it will significantly improve its folding performance (gods know it needs it), but I do a lot more than folding on it and did I mention I need a performance upgrade...??

Consider yourself fortunate if you are able to OC at all on your motherboard (don't know what board you're using). I'm running 3644MHz with my E5440s but that is on my Skulltrail that supports all kinds of OCing. I still haven't reached the OC ceiling yet and that's using 667MHz RAM. Still way too slow for my liking...
I've never performed a voltage mod on any Intel chip. Did that once or twice on old Athlons with little to no significant success and too much extra heat. Didn't want to risk it on more expensive Intel hardware. I've only went so far as the standard BSEL mod and using Systool for further FSB increases. Got me to #3 on the team a couple of years ago with the help of these mods.
I know how frustrating it can be to OC this platform. So often it's a case of, "I'm almost there if I can only..."

Thanks but that doesn't really help. Those are specific to his chips VID, and he doesn't even say what his VID is.
Basically what I'm looking for is a chart with 1's and 0's. For example, I only remember that 1.0875 is 101010 for VID's 6 though 1, and 1.2875 is 011010. Well, 5400 chips probably don't run as hot being 45nm. I got 3.9ghz out of these chips so far volt modded for 1.2875v, I wish vdroop wasn't so bad at full load they go down to 1.22v.
I also discovered that I'm not going to get any higher either. For some reason once all 4 cores hit 70c the CPU throttles. I have found no option in the bios to turn it off, so 3.9 is going to be max. I really wanted to atleast hit 4ghz, atleast for benching. I just hate that it throttles at such a low temp.
Nobody here probably knows about this bench, but a 2600k at 4.9ghz scored 1824 points (total score, obviously higher single threaded and floating point but not as high multithreaded)

What case is that you've got your system in? I've been looking for a decent case to put my X7DWE in; did it have screw holes for the processor backplate, or did you have to mod it? My current case was the only one I had that had pre-drilled holes for the backplate, but the airflow stinks and I've ended up MacGyvering a fan on the front so it looks pretty bad.

Hmm... I didn't know that throttling can potentially become an issue... I never reached the frequency you've attained yet specifically because the multipliers on my processors are smaller being lower binned CPUs, but, I have encountered temperatures well in excess of 70C (summertime/poorly installed HSFs) and there was no detectable throttling in my systems...which leads me to believe there could be something else involved. I am wondering if there might still be a setting in your BIOS that could be holding you back. On my boards (Supermicros, Tyan) there are quite a few things I need to disable to be 100% sure. Which motherboard are you running?
I guess you must be much happier attaining a stable 3.9GHz with the volt mod compared to an unstable 3.6GHz.
I had an offer for two X5460 processors (9.5 multi) and didn't take them because I was concerned that the higher power rating on the X-series would be a detriment to OCing. I have excellent cooling (CM TPC 812) in the system I would have installed them in (D5400XS), but I was under the impression that a lower multiplier yet cooler E-series chips such as your E5450 processors would be an overall better setup. Now that you posted this info about throttling I may have made the right decision, however to be absolutely certain you should check the BIOS once more thoroughly in order to verify all throttling settings are indeed disabled, or there isn't anything else going on.
It's a cooler master Elite 431 case.
Yeah my friend got the same board (X7DWE), and he noticed that the bios is a bit buggy. Sometimes it takes a couple times changing the one setting that turns off thermal throttling for it to work. I haven't given it a try yet, but it doesn't really matter I'm not interested in increasing the voltage anymore anyway so I'll be fine at a rock stable 3.8ghz running about 65c max temps (mostly stays at 40-50c using it as my server).
