The funny thing about this problem is that it is worse for people that actually use the site the way it was intended, to stay in contact with friends and family. Face it, once your friends leave, what reason is there to use Facebook?

It’s lemming-like, I know, to have followed my friends into the social network and then follow them out in this way. But the thing about social networks is that they only work when everyone’s there and everyone’s active.

It was Facebook that gave us FOMO, or Fear Of Missing Out. Despite the record-breaking number of users and profits, it increasingly feels like the party is happening elsewhere.

IRC is BACK!!!

If your old Girlfriends leave Facebook.. Looks like you will have to drive by there house to stalk them the old fashion way

NSA now doesn't know your taking a dump on the toilet. Stopped Posting pictures of poop.

Its and inserting subject. I've been thinking about dumping it recently as most people I know are using it as a political bitch session. On Purpose I have outlook rules from years ago that shitcan most political stuff. I can't do that on facebook.

So what is left, just what the article said, photos, etc. from the past.

Got sick of Facebook. Sick of people not responding back. Its a one way conversation. I post and like a ton of material and no one is saying anything or talking. Once in awhile they respond back but that's once in a blue moon. I hate Facebook. It destroyed all the instant messengers. If your not on Facebook your pretty much out in the desert. People in general now seem so anti social now. Everyone seems so self conscious about what they say or do. After awhile a person shouldn't give a crap anymore. Can't be so afraid to talk about yourself that you just huddle into a corner and just die. Facebook is just as dead as Myspace. Only thing good about Myspace was that you could add strangers but on Facebook you get blocked when adding any strangers. You can't make new Friends on Facebook. It promotes antisocial behavior. Only thing different about Facebook is that you can see news feeds of strangers community pages and companies. Can't even add anyone at all. Its just a false sense of friendship. No one does anything on it. The people i do see doing stuff on it are old people that interact with older family over 50. Anyone young is just too self conscious and insecure to post anything these days. Sick of it all. Feel like deleting my Facebook but if i do that i will be isolating myself only lol. Facebook is a girls corner. Girls can add anyone and they won't get blocked. If a guy adds any stranger they will get blocked and reported. Its just all one sided. Facebook is only good for news and updates of whats happening in the world. Everything else about friendships and all that its just garbage.

Facebook is not a girls only thing. It's an old people only thing and no, girls can't add anyone they want and not get blocked. They can add any horny, desperate guy they want, but the good ones that are worth adding are mostly in stable, boring relationships and you'd hafta go sorta evil to break up their marriage (which, by the way, doesn't work most of the time as there's always the stringing along for sex with someone 20 years younger and the constant, "I'm working on breaking things off with my wife. It'll only be a few more weeks before we can do this out in the open, I promise." Pfft...whatever) to really keep them as Facebook friends. So yeah, you're actually better off deleting your account and just not dealing with people on it. Face to face stuff is totally more rewarding and worthwhile anyway.

lol thats the problem though. I would do face to face more but reality isn't like that with younger people. Everyones behind computer screens, androids, and iphones/ipads. Once your offline in this generation your pretty much on your own. Your cut off isolated from the community. Only people you have around are your work coworkers you see everyday. Old fashion face to face stuff doesn't happen anymore as much. Don't have a choice but to stay in Facebook and take it the way it is. Its just the consequences of living in a digital age and digital generation.

Haha QFT.

Facebook is great. You can customize it to fit your needs if you take the effort. If you hate the people on Facebook, then maybe you should change your own circle of friends that you add to your FB account.

Really? I don't at all get that with my friends who aren't really that old. In fact, most of them are between like 18 and 25 and hardly any of them really end up stuck to their screens all the time. I think maybe in the 25+ groups that didn't grow up with smartphones, the tech is still kinda interesting, but to younger people, I think that it's mostly a yawn-fest of nothing fantastic. A lot of younger people aren't even bothering with a phone at all since you know, there's less monies around and better stuff to do with it than get texts and calls from work when you're trying to shop or get snackies.

Only on the weekends face to face but everything in between a person will be left in the dark without a Facebook mostly. Texting happens but i don't use that that much since i am already on a computer most of the day at work and at home. Every place i go to has Wifi so using the internet connection is much cheaper and faster anyways.

End it like a normal person does in 2014. Just post her nudes online and send them to (all?) her friends and be done with it. No stalking required.

:D

I guess I am a rarity ... I actually enjoy Facebook ... it is a convenient way to keep in touch with my old high school friends and a few former coworkers ... also, it is a useful way to stay in touch with my kids who live 9000 miles away right now ... besides it is a good venue to get my daily dose of rescue animal stories and kitty pics (which is kind of the whole point of the internet) :p

I started an account to share family photos because family was too damn lazy to open emails.
Then they start getting upset because I don't want to play farmville or some other stupid click spam game with them.

No real point to it.

It sounds like you have a case of "needtogothefuckoutsideandtalktorealpeople-itis"

My friends wouldn't leave me. I'm a somebody. All the likes I get are proof of that. It's just as good as when you get your name in the phone book.

I think that a lot of people who say they use FB to 'keep in touch' with old high school friends, or old acquaintances, really mean, "it's a nice, passive way for me to see what they post." Because let's face it, you more than likely aren't having meaningful interactions with most folks you're 'friends' with in FB.

When I realized that all I was doing on FB was scrolling down my news feed, not really interacting with anyone because what's the point, and then only to find that FB chooses what, of my friends updates, to actually show me, I stopped visiting FB. I still kept my account because it is a convenient place to post/share photos of life events.

Um no... I went back to college in '09 and of the dozen people in class taking "notes" on laptops, 11/12 of those kids were on Facebook.

It kind of has killed instant messaging though, or maybe I just outgrew that.

I noticed myself getting sucked in to too many articles from sites I subscribed to like Business Insider. Also felt obligated for some reason to like everyone's kids photos because they liked mine, new profile pictures and inspirational quotes of the day I had enough of. Deactivated, much more time for other things. More productive. More time to look at porn.

If the mod's would stop messing with people's settings, sharing content that should never have seen the light of day, blocking friends so that they each think the other blocked them, and a dozen other things I could see why people are upset. People have enough trouble figuring out what the other people are thinking without that extra layer of confusion. I have the personal contact info of almost everyone in my friends list and the rest are people I know through other means. I use facebook more for following music bands and finding new music. The best thing would be if facebook did was bethsoft just did fire the lot and hire on new people with the understanding you mess with anyone's profile your fired. It would solve a lot of issues. It's funny a lot of what they do that upsets people is not even covered in the terms of service it is just stuff that happens behind the scenes.

Facebook when setup properly and with a maximum number of allowable friends is a good tool.

I have a maximum number of 30 and I clean it every quarter. If I am over 30 I make a post saying it's that time and anyone who fails to respond gets removed. Yes that includes family too.

Uh...welcome to half a decade ago? People in college in 2009 are reaching their 30s now and are on their way to becoming the geezers of the world. Besides that, in 2009 Facebook was still super new and interesting. It's boring junk for old people or, more recently, the Internet's second biggest corporate cyberstalker behind data mining creepster Google...those 2009-y losers who are too old to even glance at in real life nowadays. They're just working world gray hairs plugging up the system and getting in the way of the rest of us with their laziness and their huge screen, dinosaur phablets.

It is a trend; something else will come along and be trendy, and everyone else will follow ... Just as MySpace, Facebook, there will be the next "great" thing..

These social media networks are dumbing down our society

What happens when my friends leave Facebook? I won't know about it, because I never had a Facebook account. Problem solved!

I don't know why people add strangers on Facebook. I don't add strangers. When strangers add me, I turn them down even if it was a hot girl (most likely a guy or a spam). I only add or accept those that I know or have met in real life.

I have never booked my face. I do have a couple friends who ask why I'm not on there, but they are the ones usually spamming useless posts every day. I know because somehow linkedin sends me facebook notifications.

Imho FB is for chicks, kids, and old people to post grandkid pictures.

That just proves the point that Facebook is for old people :)

very very very common story

sounds like your family has nothing better to do than plug into the machine

too bad they don't have any hobbies, or enjoy the outdoors, etc ad infinitum...

it all depends on how you use it. I use it to keep in touch with friends and family, but as a DJ, I also use it to promote shows, and promote myself and that has had a much greater reach then pointing folks to a single website. As an example, I can setup an event page for a show I'm throwing, invite my 500 friends, and ask them to invite all their friends. Before you know it, you have around 2000 people "going". out of the 2000 "going" usually 300 or so show up. Doesn't sound like much, but that's 300 people I wouldn't have reached with out it. That's also 300 additional people who came on top of people who came because of email blasts, flyers, and word of mouth. At 5$ a head at the door, that's 1500$ in door sales, not including bar sales that was made. Average shows cost around 2000$ - 2500$ so with out facebook, I wouldn't break even.

Having crap show up in your feed, just mouse or click on the drop down arrow next to the post, and click unfollow that person. You can easily clean up your feed. If someone gets mad because you don't like their kid photos, that's their problem, not yours. It can definitely be a time vampire, but its all in what you are trying to get out of it.
