Oh my god....just...speechless right now...

Tried browsing to all my common online hardware stores wondering about replacing my Iiyama VM Pro 454 19" CRT with maybe a 21" or larger monitor (maybe)

And blow me...there's practically NO CRT's around, those which have ANY stock appear to be just old stuff they've not managed to get rid of yet.

Im running in 1920 1440 right now, at 85Hz and I wouldn't run any lower for my desktop, in fact in the past i've used 2048 1536 75 for extended periods of time, and I still do now when I'm mapping or modeling.

This is easily the best monitor I've ever had and it was £300 when I got it which considering the quality and the high refresh at high res is really damn good.

So here's my question...Where in the hell can I purchase a new CRT, 21" or above with resolutions upto 2048 1536 @ 75Hz.

I REFUSE to use a rubbish LCD and the lame low res rubbish they provide, I've only seen a few higher res ones in my recent investigations and they're all over £1000 which is just totaly lame.

One last thing whatever seller needs to deliver to the UK cheaply, ta.

You're expecting too much. There is no way a seller could ship a freaking 21" CRT cheaply, dream on sucker. Either wait until LCDs get better, or drive around and try to buy one.

Or you can buy a Sony FW900 for $1000. :D

Which btw weighs 100lbs, so goodluck on breaking your back.

I dont mind paying shipping in the UK just not from abroad. Im not expecting too much i've bought loads of monitors in the past for family and friends as well as my own.

It just amazes me that CRT's are so dead, the only option we have for high res atm seems to be stupidly priced large screen LCD's which isn't a great option tbh.

It's not some sort of conspiracy people. The attributes of LCDs are what the market wants. The only group of people being dragged kicking and screaming into it are the niche hardcore gamer, some of which are already using and happy with their flat panels.

Unfortunately there are no high end PC CRTs in production anymore. You might find some on Ebay but be sure they allow returns if its defective or DOA and of course check user feedback ..I bought my used (4 year old) 24" FW900 CRT off ebay 8 months ago and its been awesome.

Trinitrons are no longer being produced, but you should be able to get decent big Shadow Mask CRT's:

Example:
http://www2.p4c.philips.com/files/2/202p75_75/202p75_75_pss_aen.pdf

Check the date of issue. April 22/2006, so these seem to be in production and being updated with new models.

It does 2048x1536 at 80 Hz refresh.

Profit margins are now better on LCD, so get a high end CRT while you can.

I use this example because the local shop a few KM's away will order this in for about $500 CDN ($450 USD).

Big box stores only carry a token CRT, they are done with that buisness.

You guys should look up Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) acts (or not, since they're mostly boring), which the UK keeps slipping on implementing but will be in place soon...they put responsibility for safe disposal of products like CRTs on all people in the manufacturing and sale. CRTs contain leaded glass, and large quantities of lead in other components as well as phosphorous, cadmium, barium and mercury. Lead, cadmium and mercury are restricted by the RoHS. Puts people off making CRTs...

...Do you read some kind of braille? At that res, all I can imagine is a bunch of little dots on the screen; where the letters used to be!

This last weekend I went to a yard sale with my 12 year old son.
We saw a crappy Fudgpaq Pissario with a 21" monitor (crt) for sale for $80.
I asked the guy if he would sell just the monitor for $20.

After a brief pause he said ok, and an hour later my son was playing Factions on his 21" beauty. It rocks. P110 is the model number.

They are out there. People hate them, so they will get cheaper and cheaper.

hah nope 1920x1200 is the recommended resolution for this monitor in the user manual,it actually maxes out at 2304x1440 resolution, also gotta take into consideration this is a 24" screen.

I took this shot awhile back to show text clarity in the corners of the screen ,this was with the desktop @ 1920x1200 ..just think of it without the nasty Morie effect (wavy lines) caused by my camera , plus I used a flash so its a bit washed out.

Ahh, thats true. I was forgetting how large a 24" monitor is. Thing must weigh a ton!

Sharp text also. It appears to do a ver y nice job with text- at that resolution that is!

Dude - just buy a Dell 3007 - it's not perfect, but i almost guarantee you will not be disappointed. You are clearly someone who appreciates high resolution and the Dell's 2,560 x 1,600 res will blow you away. Don't knock it till you've tried it...

Viewsonic makes a 21" CRT that is sweet. Just got mine in a few weeks ago.
http://www.viewsonic.com/products/desktopdisplays/crtmonitors/graphicseries/g225fb/

I paid 450$ for it or you can get the old version G220FB for 350$ or so.

New version is nice because it can do 85hz at 2048x (the G220FB is only supposed to run 60hz that high but you can run it higher without problems if you aren't afraid of it blowing up and sending it back,) it has BNC connectors as well as VGA (dual inputs is nice but I havn't figured out how to switch between them other than in the menu), also .20 dot pitch instead of .21. The casing looks a little nicer too. I had the G220FB before I scored this one and they are both badass.

I run either 2048x or 1920x desktop with 120DPI (because I'm blind.) Text is clear and everything even on the default 96DPI, movies and games look awesome. Also very good for porn.

The problem with LCDs, even Dell's 30-incher, is that the colors still aren't at the same levels as their CRT kin. Try watching a DVD on that 3007. If you look closesly, it looks like a crappy XViD rip due to the contrast issues. And the 3007's a pretty nice LCD. For most people, it's fine, the same way onboard audio suits most non-audiophiles. But some people HAVE to have the clarity only an LCD can offer... Until SEDs come out. High-end photographers, digital media editors, and purists need the CRTs.

Speaking of, have you tried getting ahold of your local SGI dealer? I'm fairly certain they still use the sony GDM series with some of their workstation models.
