My current HTPC setup:

win7 32bit / xbmc gotham 13.1
c2d e2160 @3ghz
3gb ram
8800GT dvi to hdmi adapter to my 1080p 3d projector
SPDIF from mobo connected to my AVR
HD Homerun to watch local HD channels via Windows Media Center (I never had time to setup XBMC yet)
7.1 AVR with HD audio support.
7.1 speaker setup

I've always thought spdif can do HD AUDIO, but it cannot... So I would never be able to use 7.1 audio track on my 7.1 speaker setup.

My question to HTPC experts is, what would be good modern GPU to watch 1080P content, support HD Homerun and stream HD Audio via HDMI connection? I would like to stick to nvidia if possible. Unless you can convince me to buy amd gpu for my htpc needs. I do not game on it, so I don't need extra muscle.

Thanks in advance. ;)

Any GPU that is AMD 5000 series or Higher and nvidia GTX 400 series or higher.

I would recommend a GT 640 if a little extra performance. GT 430 would do just fine if you want something cheap that will do the job.

GTX 470, 480, 570, and 580 can't do DTS-HD, so don't bother looking at those. Then again, they are too high-powered for your purposes, so they shouldn't be on the radar anyways.

Every modern card should be capable of doing DTS-HD over HDMI.
