What GFX card is the sweet spot for Fallout: NV at 1440x900?

I've got a friend who is running a Phenom II triple core unlocked to a quad @ 3.2 ghz, 4 gigs DDR2 1066 and an overclocked 8800GTS 512. His monitor maxes at 1440x900. Think the 8800GTS will handle fallout New vegas? If not, what would be a good option to upgrade to with a budget of around $150-200? Keep in mind the res he is running, it doesnt have to be a beast of a card to handle that.

Probably, and if you feel the need to upgrade, you certainly do not need a $150 card.

At that resolution you can get a card for $100-150 and still be perfectly fine. Maybe something like a 5770, which is a damn good bang for buck in the 100-150 price range.

Your buddies 8800 gts will run it fine at that res. No reason to upgrade just for that game. If he really wants to upgrade the gpu than a 460 or 6850 will be a excellent upgrade but overkill for that resolution.

i have a 460 and it is way overkill for FO NV.

i play at 1920x1080 with a 3.5ghz Penom II Quad Core

i have AA and AF turned way up and i rarely dip below 60fps (i play with Vsync on)

the card usually will sit at 65% GPU utilization while playing the game

this, hell a 5670 would be fine

My rig is in my sig. My monitor maxes out at 1400x900 and I play Fallout3 at max settings without a hiccup. Not played FO3 New Vegas yet. But it can't be that much more demanding.

I played Fallout New Vegas on my HD3870 at 1680 x 1050 on High settings but no AA. I think the GTS was a notch above the 3870 so I think you'd be ok.

That card is a 250GTS really so OC'd to or beyond it's specs should run the game fine

If your friend also plays DX11 games, then a 5770, 5750, or GTS 450 will all be great.

If your friend isn't that much into the newer DX11 games, get the best card you can for the money. A GTX 260 or a 4850, or anything better than those from the last generation will also be great.

HD4850 & HD5750 won't be much faster than a decently OC'd 8800gts512, though the other suggestions are decent upgrades for the prices they currently run at.

For what it's worth, I've been playing NV on the rig in my sig at 1600x1200, 8800GTS included. Looks & runs fine, although you can't exactly run max settings - unfortunately I can't recall the exact settings I've been using offhand.

If you have that much to spend, get the 6850. Even if its too much card, its only around $189. Its a little future proof.
