What does a crash to static diagonal lines mean?

So, since installing a 6800 GT, I will periodically crash to a static screen of black with diagonal lines when loading 3d graphics. BFG has offered to RMA the card (of course), but what is wrong? Oh, and this has happened with this card in 2 different computers.
 
Diagonal lines is a sync problem. If you haven't tested another monitor (and/or properly set up the monitor type to make sure it's not out of refresh/frequency range), you should.

If you have tried another monitor and set up both properly, then it's probably the same diagnosis as BFG gave you: a bad card.

BTW, what monitor(s) are you using and what monitor driver are you running?
