What do you use for media storage, HD wise

Right now, I've got a 250gbx4 RAID 5 array for DVD/MP3 storage, which is rapidly running out of space. I think I'll be buying 3 x 300 gig drives (or 2 x 400 gig drives) to copy everyhting off the RAID array so I can turn it into a JBOD array. mmm, terabyte array.

In my SageTV server, I have a 250 gig drive for recorded programs, which is also running out of space, but not as quickly. I'll be adding another 250 gig drive that I have to ensure my ass get's as wide as my couch as soon as possible.

What do you guys have? And what are your plans?

my server has 2x200, 1x160, and a 40 for the OS. my desktop has another 200 for storage. Honestly, I don't have any expansion plans. The 2x200 is for movies. I only keep my most watched movies on it and a rotation of new releases/purchases. The 160 is for PVR use. I routinely delete old or burn the stuff I want to keep to DVD. the 200 in my desktop is the temp space for archiving PVR shows.

For some reason it hurts less to loose one movie to an expred disc than 80 to a failed drive.

1 x 80 Gb - OS and apps, MP3's and misc storage
1 x 160 Gb - DVD library
1 x 250 Gb - Sage PVR storage

I know 160 seems small for the DVD's, but I'm Divx compressing everything. Should give me 300 movies or so. I'll change motherboards and add SATA capacity if I have to get more room.

I have a hodgepodge of drives I got when they hit the magic $0.35 / GB level.

File server:
1x 250
1x 200
1x 180
1x 160
1x 9GB SCSI (OS plus high speed access stuff)
The big drives are in a volume group, with one bigass logical volume across them. I have a DVD notebook with backups of everything. Triple bonded nics (one is gigabit, and can be removed from the bond and runs dhcpd for when I want to xover cable some stuff). This thing will pump out data to three clients without slowing down at all. Abit AT7 mobo, so lots of IDE channels (6)

Mythtv backend
80GB sata boot + storage (dell sc420)
250GB storage
so approx 300GB of actual storage for off the air recorded shows.

4x250 - for all sorts of storage

1x10 - for OS

Mind you this is still a work in progress and eventually it will be a MythTV backend and the frontend will be my xbox running xMyth

7 x 250GB for DVD/MP3 storage in the media server plus 80GB for OS/APPS.

Each htpc also has an 80GB HDD for OS/APPS.

2X120GB for storage of stuff
1X40GB for OS/some stuff

xbox with 250GB and holds all music/tvrips (running low on room!)

movies are on dvds where they belong (at least in my opinion)

I'll go along with you on the "bastard" part..... :D

As a buddy of mine at work would say, "That's a lot of porn!"

I just hope it's enough (storage that is). ;) :D

You should see the rest of the specs.

My File server has 2 x 250GB and 2 x 80GB drives JBOD style for DVDs. 1 x 15GB for OS(Linux). My HTPC has 1 x 200GB for TV recording, and 1 x 30GB for OS(MCE2k5).

dont leave us hanging! :p
Well so far since most of the money will be in harddrives I was thinking of going with something like two Opteron 242s, Tyan Tiger K8W, Broadcom BC4852D RAID controller (although I'm going to wait for their SATA2 version which adds support for NCQ) and two CoolerMaster HYPER 6 heatsinks for the CPUs (I hope I can run them passively). Still don't know whether or not I'm going with a custom case yet. It's not too impressive but the main objective is for a ton of storage and to run it as quiet as possible while keeping it relatively fast (I have plans for those two Opterons ;) ).

OK, now, not only is that a lot of porn, but now it's a lot of high-speed on-demand porn. :D  :D

Good job.

holy jeebus! What else will it do besides serve up porn files?:D

Have you checked out the CoolerMaster CM Stacker? For such a big case it's suprisingly quiet. Even the 4 in 3 drive cages are pretty quiet.

Yeah I've thought of the Stacker and some of Lian-Li's case but nothing really stricks my fancy you know?

I've been thinking about the mobo for a while now since memory performance is something thats going to be important I'm probably better off getting a mobo that supports NUMA. I'll probably end up going with Tyan’s Thunder K8WE with two XFX 6600 cards and run quad moniters from it (I can find ways to use all four moniters :) ) and three PCI-X slots.

Mmmm, two PVR500s and a 2Tb RAID array with quad moniters......

Not a super storage solution but it’s enough for now.
I’m always looking to expand my capacity. I’m currently limited by my Sonata case (room for 4 drives).

Media Storage Computer
2x250gb SATA RAID-0 <-- SATA RAID limit of board. Max 2 drives.
2x80gb PATA RAID-0 <-- OS, and encoding work drive. (mobo has capacity for 4x pata raid.)

See sig. Most videos are stored on server, and most music on htpc. This setup is great for me, seeing as I'm not using my htpc for pvr. (Kind of pointless since I have a dvr on my STB in my other rooms, and HD box on the TV where my HTPC is.
(Waiting patiently though for pvr cards capable of HD input......)
